You would turn within your Bibles to Hebrews chapter 6 continue our study there in Hebrews six. We have a few passages first to look at before that the it there for now in the chapter on the resurrection first rankings 15 Paul lays out the list therefore us the basics of the gospel he begins that chapter with the basics of the gospel and some of you might remember those first all that Jesus died according to the Scriptures that he was buried that he rose again on the third day and then he appeared to many and he tells there are over 500 now that last point a lot of times it gets overlooked or Passover really quickly. We focus on the others because they are glorious truths but we miss that last sometimes, but it’s important as well and the reason that is is important is because it matters whether not the gospel account is verifiable a lot of people make up a lot of things they have done that name of religion they said all we know this happened is happened in and so on but was not verifiable. Jesus they claim that he would rise again. And so was necessary to show that what he said was true God delights to glorify himself by promising to overcome insurmountable odds and then proving to his creation that he has in the accomplished the impossible and he did that is done that many of its many times in the springtime when he raised Jesus from the dead but yourself in the the position of those to whom he had been teaching us he was talking about how he was going to die and rise again and they were perplexed at the and so when he was arrested and tortured and put to death. They were really sure what to think their release but it still it was still hard to fathom then he appeared to many on various occasions you if you are one of those people and it appeared that Jesus had indeed risen again and he now has appeared okay. Verify that he really did rise bodily that he wasn’t just you know the spirit a problem with the the spirit living on a lot but the Jews didn’t believe. Some believe in a resurrection body but generally that was going to be for as we earlier in the last day but right now, after three days, so if you now saw this he thought Christ and that you believe that okay this is Christ that is he a robot he wanted how would you verify that for yourself that you’re not just seeing a ghost or seeing a spirit will him. I remember a number. The passages where Jesus did appear and there their wonderful passages think about the 24 Jesus appeared to him and they assume that anything the thickness the spirit of the time was on so he he said he can touch me and in so they’re excited about that I like okay wow but they still not quite believing it is a he said anything the younger what they brought some broiled fish, Freddy DeLuca such a great story me pretty even in the little details like and so he then later in John 20 are another occasion John 20 Mary Magdalene. When she saw the risen Lord. She was excited Shelley testing but virtue is going to him and him Jesus in a something to and then another occasion still in John 20 they’re in a locked room. The disciples were in Jesus appears. Bindle the door comes in the house is like okay he can go through walls. Surely he spirit the camera body of her wall is in their thinking and so Jesus showed his disciples his his hands of the winds and his side the river, Thomas was yes, he was doubting but I think he also knew that if he was going to be preaching this gospel that Jesus is the Messiah and that he died for our sins and that he would he has indeed risen from the dead the nature reserve be persecuted for this put to death possibly he’s now to be sure that that really did happen reason until the people as a remember the story went when Jesus appeared to them again. This time Thomas was with the disciples when he tell Thomas Zimmerman can you get it. The spirit when it Jesus was have a real body he wasn’t just asperity was three-dimensional if actually not just touch him but you can actually put your hand of the ones is three-dimensional he had a real body little bit later John 21 member the disciples I wonder what to do and pieces unofficial of course everybody out what they all hopped about the go fishing and never how that went how successful all the kitchen their fractured and you are Lord died teamster for his again were not sure Thanksgiving to finish in a can go back to her old ways and there Jesus on the bank these the breakfast it remains important significance officiant will furcal fire: a calls out to oasis you detach a things that no is okay to try this they didn’t you know unbelievable catch the and they realize that the Lord and you Peter flies out there makes his way to the Lord they’ll come up in Jesus it your of the breakfast for it breaks more fish feed rest of the you he can truly risen from the dead he rose from the dead and exists in both spirit and body a regional I had is a marvelous gospel all of that together those who believe the same gospel will be saved but she this this salvation in Jesus ghettos that he grains that he causes in us is the gospel is also called newness of life. New life is evident in genuine believers in other words this new life gives visible proof that it does exist but it really is life. Jesus just as he could prove that he had been resurrected in body so to do believers show that they have been raised to walk in newness of life life attests to his own existence but see how the presence of true life and these readers give this author confidence in their spiritual condition selected follow with misery Hebrews 6 now beginning verse 44 in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit and have tasted the word of God and the powers and the age to come, and then have fallen away it is impossible to renew them again to repentance since they again crucify to themselves the son of God and put him to open shame foreground the drinks the rain which often falls upon it and brings forth vegetation useful to the to those for whose sake is also to receives a blessing from God not if it yields thorns and thistles is worthless and a curse hangs over it. It ends up being burned by beloved we are convinced of better things concerning you and things that accompany salvation the we are speaking in this way God is not just so as to forget your work and the love which is shown towards maintaining and having ministered in still ministering to the Saints and we desire that each one of you show the same diligence so as to realize the full assurance of hope until the that you may not be sluggish but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises last week we saw how it was possible to have great religion to have a list of the religious things true about you and then that can be true about any believer. And yet the person and could still not be a genuine believer spiritual influences even great ones do not cause a person to be saved. They go rule simplistic one like attending church regularly is something that believers will do genuine believers will attend church were a group attending church regularly doesn’t make you a genuine believer and so that list that we saw last time verses four through six those things will be true believers but the may also be true of those who are not they are not certain signs that a person has genuinely been redeemed but it is indeed possible to have confidence about your own conversion but the conversion of other people so this week and next were a see what, what that confidence is based on were going to of these two weeks look at three things will get one today number one why the author is confident about the good spiritual status of his readers but see that verse nine next time we’ll see number two what those things are they giving confidence verse 10 the number three what he desires them to do now verse 11 and 12 so first number 118 the author is confident about the good spiritual status of his readers is look at verse nine again but beloved we are convinced of better things concerning you and things that accompany salvation though we’re speaking in this way so after having talked about the things that the true those who do follow way. He now switches gears and he’s talking about a different group of people he was talking as we saw last time verses four through six and in verse a those who would follow way but using the word but here he said the contrast of it is a difference between those people in the ones I’m talking about now and those whose talk about now he calls beloved see he has a whole different outlook on he expresses his love for them. He also in that is showing his confidence in him and he says and why he’s comfortable calling them beloved is because he says we are convinced of better things concerning you. We can take that as meaning that he is firmly convinced about us about their spiritual condition but the danger they face we we seen how verses one through three that they were stagnant in their faith that they had learned. The spiritual ABCs about Jesus but did not move on beyond in spite of that he’s confident that these his readers are truly in the faith is doesn’t mean that the warning really doesn’t apply to them and it doesn’t mean that is also proclaiming with apostolic authority that all of them are actually in the face. He saying that based on what he knows about the Christian life was not impressive gives evidence of real life find a similar pattern think about when Jesus addresses the church at Ephesus in relation to the there he does talk about you the problem they had a conference that was sharp words but they he also talks about things that are there wonderful about the great things about that church Paul if you read first Corinthians you sometimes away was wondering if these people say they think about the problems that they had it from every different direction you look at the they had these problems being serious problems immorality all kinds of things. And yet he says in second Corinthians 74 great is my confidence in you great is my posting on your behalf, I am filled with comfort I’m overflowing with joy in all our affliction so the writer the Hebrews in the same way says that he’s firmly convinced of better things concerning his readers instead of lots of religion you just great religion a lot of different things religious things in their life against of better things concerning he has he sees a bright hope for them it’s not tied up within it is a okay good heaven after those first few verses it would become scared the neighbors they were fun to go back to being sluggers and he’s a son he trying to encourage them as he said in verse one to be carried along were some have it press on toward maturity do not just sit here stagnant because he sorry showing us that to remain stagnant is to be in a dangerous position because those who remain stagnant could show that the not genuinely say dingle backward and follow way from the faith. He is convinced the true work of God has taken place in them. This is the second time these uses concept of better he is it back in chapter 1 verse four talk about Jesus is better than the Angels is many years a number of other times later in the book. This is a theme or he showing over and again that everything associated with Jesus is better than something else in and he goes through his works his way through all the different things that Jesus’s sacrifice salvation. Jesus all of it is better so these things which are better things that accompany salvation now literally it is that these things have salvation word but that doesn’t make sense not to us but the idea is that that these things is better things in salvation are closely associated say they’re so closely associated that these things can serve as a sign that salvation really does exist if we can look into a person’s heart and see salvation as it is anything you know that we can see with our eyes that salvation is there except these things are the these evidences that salvation is there it we talked and Galatians about the fruit of the Spirit is one way you can be convinced is if you see genuinely the fruit of the spirit and you know James talks about the works that are but flow from faith Paul talked about that Ephesians chapter 2 it we we quickly recite those verses 89 your for migration saved through faith not of yourselves get the God of works but no one should boast and forget verse 10 is is a were created in Christ Jesus for what the good works he said. That’s what should flow out from our salvation if we are indeed saved by grace through faith that he’s going to talk about these more will see more next time verse 10 he talks about their work there it looks as if you look at verse 10 for God is not unjust so as to forget you’re working alive which you have shown toward his name in having ministered in still ministering to the Saints the stand in contrast to what he gave us in verses four through six that if for through six there alone it doesn’t give us enough confidence but we see in verse 10 says that season where develop that more next time but will those things in verses four through six don’t necessarily accompany salvation or in other words they don’t prove that salvation is there we can have confidence a person salvation is genuine if we see flowing from it these works in ministering to the same his love that that moves us to minister to the Saints and we seen that recently held this this is great a lot of the works to go with it in ministering to those who need salvation is being delivered from the guilt and penalty of sin to the blood of Christ, but it’s also being raised to walk in newness of life it is also becoming a new creation referring their Romans six for us are Christians 517 as I said earlier life attests to its own existence the writer concludes this verse with this though we’re speaking in this way it as he was going through verses one through eight. They may be wondering what he thinks about and so here verse 90s is now what you understand that I know you guys in based on what I know about you I’m confident of your Fay even though I’m having to talk to you because of your stagnancy spirituals they stay of having to confront you about of speaking to you in this way is important thing about this warnings are only given when there is still hope of rescue right if someone Ephesus went too far out in the is one with are now drowning in is no hope of anyone rescuing them because of how far out they are you warned that person should Julie give warning when they’re still hope of rescue. He’s giving a warning here because though they are stagnant in their faith. There is hope there is still hope for them because what he knows about some if a brother or sister has become stagnant in their walk with Christ. We can follow this men’s example of how to minister to it is this original is more but for today you just give you three things that can’t get us thinking and in that direction. First, if you see someone who appears to be stagnant look for genuine fruit in their lives do you see the kinds of things that he describes in in verse 10 and endotoxin morbus mother things later in the letter easy those kinds of things things that it was to look for great religion a person’s life the things that usually explained by the change the gospel and second if you find that encourage them and give them hope prissy a lot more about hold later in chapter 6 to finish off the it started little rough is to finish off is so wonderful talking about hold the real high point in chapter 2/3 exhort them using verse one to be carried along toward maturity with all of us to join all of us together in a safe the list goes on and on together and in move toward maturity in and when you’re we call pull you along in when I’m week you pull me along this is go together toward maturity and grow together Christ has been raised he has the living body to prevent if you have been raised with Christ you have the living works and love that would be an active love to present if you do then press on the carry forward to maturity keep maturity in the faith don’t be content with the stagnant state of spirituality if you don’t have those things and come back to the gospel heard several times here this morning think about the gospel what a sweet means which you have to believing that is what you have to do in response the gospel is to believe and repent of your sins and believe the gospel to Jesus called men to do and what we almost do to be say

Your turn within your Bibles to Hebrews chapter 6. Yes, we’ve come to the big one passage that causes a lot of grief for folks in confusion for others were not we can work our way through it and come to understand what the writer intended for us to know how much impact do circumstances have gone now a person turns out to give an example when it dropped I had several years or arrears ago is this guy I want to tell you little bit about it he talked a lot about being a Christian. He has is a team in this department. I thought this is great. I have a comrade in faith and he talked to everybody about being a Christian. We had a terrific understanding boss you can ask for a better boss this may he touch a dear John letter let you do and we was there she needed in the current he made sure we had all the resources that we needed to do our jobs we we had a very interesting cutting-edge kind of work to do so it was exciting every day and then there’s this new things to learn doing try and it was not the ideal work environment is the best one I’ve ever been. But this fellow would spend his time playing computer games and are looking for sin Internet. He eventually had to be fired is worthless so many people in department five but because of those those influences that we have the circumstances that we have the great people that we work with but not this fellow we give you an example from agriculture assert writer is going to do today on our farm we once had a calf that was born something wrong with that that kept it from growing. And I think I was a young teenager at the time and seeing that there was something wrong with the Looked normal active normal does like a normal Wood and yet she never grew. And so I created a special place for her so that I could give her a lot of loving care to make sure she had the right nourishment it you got the vets recommendations on medicine and just you did everything I could to try to nurture her along and hopefully get her to start rolling. She was a sweet little but it should guide you even in spite of the circumstances which circumstances gracious influences are essential for Christians to thrive. So when someone benefits from all of that and then they follow way were perplexed about the how can one person thrive in a loving environment while another person failed and that question is what makes this passage so difficult because we can see people who seem to be just like us on outward appearances and what sometimes looks to us like enter appearances le Carre and follow way to believe they can just walk away from and so the stark finality of this passage. It sucks will soon begin unraveling and hopefully we will get the author’s intended purpose which is that’s to warn us of the reality of apostasy. So that there so that we will be diligent girl to follow with me Hebrews chapter 6 you begin verse one this is therefore leaving elementary teaching her the ABCs about the Christ let us press on to maturity not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and faith toward God of instruction about Washington laying on of hands in the resurrection of the dead and eternal judgment in this we shall do if God permits for in the case of those who have once been enlightened have used of the heavenly gift and the name partakers of the Holy Spirit and have tasted the good word of God and the powers and the age to come, and then have fallen away. It is impossible to renew them again to repentance since they can crucify to themselves the son of God and put him to open shinny for ground that drinks the rain which often falls upon it and brings forth vegetation useful to those for whose sake. It is also received a blessing from God by if it yields for warnings and thistles is worthless and close to being cursed and it ends up being burned we have before us the most controversial passages in Scripture and is lot of interviews about unwanted touch a few of those views I do not hold that the hold about this passage, going all of them. There’s a lot we can be your weeks a if you have a question about a particular view we talk about afterward we have to do that, there’s a lot of good material that we can discuss on now that’s a wanted list which a clear line away and focus primarily on what the passage actually saying I’ll touch a few times a week not say we have to do that in a few places but that they wanted talk but what it is actually saying so that we can be really clear about it. Otherwise, it could be confusing and misunderstanding has caused unnecessary grief to a lot of people it’s a functional fitness naysaying him. I wonder if that’s true me did I follow way ill that time when I send you know I a violent times I sent after coming to Christ and maybe this is me 12 this passage it on amicus from it we shouldn’t read past it just you know and we we need to take it seriously because very serious and very real but he ties this together verses four through eight with verses nine through 12 in those past those verses nine through 12 there is when the passage great whole to we have a passage one is you know this dire warning in the followed by passage of great open of course you’ll continue on through the end of the chapter 6 and zero in on are really high notes of hope and that’s fitting for such a serious passages this but the author wants to prevent this disaster from happening to his readers. And that’s why he gives them his warning in it. If you really can happen is no reason to this it has to be real depths. Some commentators and pastors choose to take this as meaning way you know mainly it’s just really difficult to renew them maybe it’s not impossible a answer is a well in this is really theoretically it’s imaginary like something you know if this could happen really bad you don’t want that to happen. They see apostasy is not something that’s truly possible. If that’s so, then Philip uses right when he says. If that is the case then this epistle with its high sounding admonitions must be dismissed as trifling worthless and ridiculous he’s right if the author were just trying to frighten his readers into depressing on to maturity and he didn’t really mean. It didn’t was true, then he’s resorting to the selection of a problem for you know someone using a tactic like the section were about but you with the business user he warned them against the danger of apostasy we saw back in chapter 3 verse 12 this was that the roof that corporate duty that we all have to each other as I just you watch yourself but he says to all of us to watch each other take care brethren, lest there should be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart that falls away from the living God. These are he warned them there is going to one and two more times against apostasy in chapters 10 and 12 see he so concerned about them becoming spiritually stagnant because he knows that if the remaining that way then this is a real danger spiritual stagnancy can be a forerunner to apostasy spiritual stagnancy can be a forerunner to apostasy. Now in this long sentence verses four through 6017 we eat with the main clause in this it is hard sometimes to follow with the are English translations of it try to smooth it out for us English thinkers a great thinkers it they it happened one order wasn’t that important but for us it is and in yet it still is a little tricky. The main causes this is impossible for those to be brought back to repentance are be reviewed again to repentance. That’s the main points and we does he splits that main clause any inserts there a list of fund have seven things that are true about them about the that those who would apostasy it is really seven things that are true about them the first six of those early true also believers but the seventh not and that’s what will set them apart in bondage this list the first six anyway he proves that they have had a formal revelation about the Messiah the truth about the Messiah but having the full revelation they choose to reject what is doing here is explaining using the word for he’s explaining why it is that they must press on to maturity chapter 6 first one beginning of this context he see it would be disastrous for them to remain spiritually stagnant he actually begins his Greek sentence with the word impossible that I would be real difficult for us but Greeks could pull word up to the front writers and give it emphasis and that’s what he does here he wants that this word to stand out to them so that when they read it the first word in the sentence is impossible he wants their ears to perk I like oh what’s impossible in with him giving such emphasis to it we we should not try to soften it to say that only means difficult or will it means just unprofitable if not impossible, but it knows heart that would be to soften it. He is getting too much emphasis but since it’s now look at the list of things in their first major point is this gracious influence and will be looking for verses for verse six for these gracious influence a read again verses 454 in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made they partakers of the Holy Spirit and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come. There the first thing he tells us about these people is that they have once been enlightened you made your minds may go back to John chapter 1 member verse nine were taught that Jesus was the true light and the light Jesus that is the with the revelation that he brought does it will enlightens every man. ECE Jesus as we saw the first part of the very first part of chapter 1 in Heber’s is that Jesus was that greatest fullest revelation of God. The prophets of old revealed God a lot of different ways that Jesus came as the greatest in the fullest representation the fullest revelation of God is a Jesus came and he enlightens every man apart from God revealing true to us. We all would remain in darkness there would be no hope we we could find out the truth on our own if God had not chosen to review it to us or to see later in Hebrews 10 verses 26 to 32 that’s this enlightenment involves receiving the knowledge of the truth. That’s what it is receiving the knowledge of the truth is of enlightenment is ignorance removed by Trevor an easy way to remember it’s ignorance removed by truth that’s what enlightenment is we even use the word a lot of times that way in English we talk about things as we have truth we learn truth in ignorance is removed is the first thing they once been like the second thing he says about it is that they had if tasted of the heavenly gift out tasted refers to a real conscious enjoyment of something. So it you know if you we have a nice lunch after this and can you taste whatever is new unit with chocolate tasting it is auditioning within it all down the tracks tasting each by savoring it we actually are experiencing we are consciously enjoying what versus off about this though and these other things in the list is that we know their true of believers believers have tasted that’s a think about a first Peter chapter 2 verse three, where believers have tasted the kindness of the Lord thing about Psalm 34 a it probably the first thinking your money think about tasting right tasting seen the Lord is what God but tasting doesn’t require are experiencing it in any ultimate sentence or we could look at it in a sense that’s permanent it can and often does but is have to we learned earlier in chapter 2 that Jesus became man he says in order to taste death for us okay I’m asking Jesus death was a real death of the real death he really die that’s with tasting means but is Jesus of that was not finally was not ultimate it was not permanent right he overcame death he rose again he tasted this is the tasting while the team refer to it and permanent enjoyment of something our permanent state of something it doesn’t have to That so is this gift that we tasteful first he says it’s heavenly in Hebrews heavenly is used to describe something that either had source in heaven. I think it’s the which used here but also it can mean that it is more entries describing has a characteristic of heaven can be described by heavenly things. We might say that so when he uses the term enough to throughout the letter this particular word what is referring to our guests in the sense of sacrifices the priests come with with gifts and and they are people come with guessing that gives the priestly brings of God get some sense of sacrifices and so I think that’s what he has in mind it the other a lot of ideas about what gets me and I think the best thing the only clues we really have from the context that work is the way that he uses this word elsewhere. But he noted is not gifts plural. Is it so a singular but it’s what you see what comfort for the were gift me keep track it seems as though he’s trying to single act if you think about it for talk about sacrifice sacrifices in which of these sacrifice and the book of Hebrews, but sacrifice would our Lord Jesus Christ right the one that that just blow them all away another even compare because his sacrifices so superior is the once for all sacrifice right that all people who are willing to be saved of all time it’s based on that one sacrifice right the gift of because we stopped now he’s okay will so these people get saved know but they tasted member tasted doesn’t have to mean that is permanent they have benefited from it we have an unbeliever in our midst we have had time to time the unbelievers that that don’t mislead saved they eventually leave they did benefit from that because we benefited in a and ultimately from that sacrifice right would different people. We live differently behaved differently. We treat not only one another but even strangers differently with the blessings that come with that so they fellowship with genuine believers and experience the blessings that come with his salvation number three they have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit I this was CC that Holy Spirit. This has to be talking about people who actually saved is always talking about their just a share were in the Holy Spirit partakers means back in chapter 2 verse four he uses it he talks about their that when the apostles not the author. But the other apostles like: the they minister to these people but the particulars of apostles did a says he talks about their how through various manifestations of the spirit. They’re on their apostleship was authenticated by the house with a report chapter 2 verse four God also bearing witness with them. The apostle God bore witness with them both by signs and wonders and by various miracles my gifts of the Holy Spirit according to his own will ECE authenticated God in front of these people authenticated his apostles by signs and miracles pay for those signing gifts and so these guys got see to that’s how they were partakers of the Holy Spirit. They received through the app apostolic exercise assigned gifts undeniable truth that the apostles spoke the words of God just as the Holy Spirit authenticated Jesus. Miracles that yes, this is the Messiah the promised one indeed this is where Jesus in his ministry pick up that idea the blasphemy of the spirit us a favor the same kinds of things here at with the blasphemy blasphemy of the spirit you see the spirit God is working through Jesus and he was performing these signs and some of his enemies. Jesus enemies are saying the he’s doing that by Beelzebub, I say ECM is the problem with that. Yes they saw unmistakable undeniable proof that he was God spirit working through Messiah because God said in the Old Testament many different ways this is Tiger but know the Messiah Jesus the back to the they saw that the been liking the one of us and so he said okay we reject the true they they saw the truth it was undeniable but they deny it in Jesus that there’s no hope for you. You shall not be forgiven because the got see truth is clear as can be and should to deny anyway apostolic teaching that Jesus is the Christ is without a doubt just as Jesus own teaching that he was Messiah is without a doubt these folks shared in the spirit ministry of authenticating the gospel before them. We have that in the Scriptures but we don’t have don’t apostles are personally to do is when the main functions of the apostle they wrote all this down for us and we’ve got in the same thing can be true of us where we have the truth laid out for us in the Scriptures authenticating Jesus as that is the Messiah the promised one and the apostles authenticated as those who would bring his message and tell us what the gospel it’s a that’s the next thing return to they have tasted the good word of God. Number four what is the word was a forceful the word he switches words for word here Own he’s been using Lamas

If you would turn with me in your Bibles t0 Hebrews chapter 6.

He restrict chapter 6 were beginning that new chapter chapter that holds a a lot of difficult and fascinating but also as we get further into the chapter. Of beloved and cherished teachings transportation is carrying something or someone to a destination if a passenger train or a plane or ship something like that doesn’t deliver people or goods to its destination. And we said let’s say it’s a failure because the sole point of transporting something from one place to another and if you have written on one of those moving sidewalks a the written one of those it the first time is little tricky unit, can escalate the first time you don’t want to step on but the really cool you see them at airports and they take you from one terminal to the next and the you know if you use either right on it just enjoy the ride. And, relax a little bit after you know, carry your luggage around or you can use it to make time and our makeup time Murray in try catch your next flight. And it because those things are moving a pretty good pace and if you walk on it while it’s moving you some running it without exerting so much as conical as well as examples of transporting someone from here to there while they do move people around and when she contribute to the personal progress of people at so this change metaphors think in terms of an assembly line okay what was morning picture a in automobile plant mat manufacturing plant take about Detroit and in such and he what happens there is it begins by on one level moving car parts from one end of this conveyor system to the other that’s not really the point of his images truck that or something it’s not the point point is is that as the these parts are moving other parts are added in with what happens as it is it builds this car up as if you were to to watch a time lapse video of what happens and you folks in a one car all the way down that that whole conveyor line it would almost look as if the car was growing we start out with like whatever the first parts the start with maybe that make up the chassis or something and then as each station you welds or bolts on the different parts that’s the appropriate that section you see this car coming together for a goes from from just know these starting parts of the chassis to the vehicle that’s ready for the road and NCC the goal of it is and just move to parts from one place to another but actually to produce this is a beautiful vehicle some that way to picture were informed that the writer of this letter is showing what it is with like four is a kind of draw a picture for us. What a healthy Christian life ought to look like think about the assembly line that picture that I gave where he the progress of of that. The parts moving down the line. The process itself because what it’s intended to do actually contributes to the growth if you will the way it looks to the growth of that car into something that’s ready for the road believers in Jesus Christ will be carried along in the sanctification process was written talk about part today see if this is the process of spiritual transportation if you will okay because were going to talk about this is moving along in our spiritual life that process is going to contribute your spiritual growth we don’t grow by just staying put. At least he tried to drive at home last time that they shouldn’t the should or even teachers by now they were special been discipling others they were they need summated disciple them. They were staying put. And so he’s rebuking him for that he wants them to know that the progress of the process. The process produces progress in this process that we are in process of sanctification should produce in us progress and what is getting is that if we don’t see progress the problem slip now it Heber Syncsort backup because he’s in this third warning passages his and backups chapter 5, verse 11, begin reading their in you was the first inverses talking about Christ’s qualifications as high priest is superior high priest and said that he was called according to the order of Melchizedek in verse 11 concerning which that order concerning which we have much to say and it is hard to explain since you become dull of hearing for though by this time you ought to be teachers is me again it’s for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God and you come to need milk and not solid food for everyone who protects only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness for he is a but solid food is for the mature who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil. Therefore leaving the elementary teaching about Christ let us press on to maturity not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God of instruction about washings and laying on of hands and the resurrection of the dead and eternal judgment. And this we shall do. If God permits in this third warning passages the author is the confronting the him about their stunted growth they should have been growing in he should’ve grown quite a bit by and they have their stunted spiritually. And so he not only rebukes them. But with the pastor’s tender care to leads them on on work things them forward is a receipt he leads them forward into the maturing process and he writes here. Therefore the words. Therefore, in light of their abnormal stunted growth they are to move on our first point is this one growth in maturity means forward progress Rizzi that the first phrase of verse one growth in maturity means forward progress. Obviously doesn’t mean like what they were doing staying put the fermented about the biblical principle apart change your talk about that here church where you have not only should put off sinful practices. But you do what you put on something it’s place. And so we find in a lot of different passages that that principle of putting off. And in putting on you don’t just put off because in something worse will come into its place you put on putting but something godly something biblical in place of that and we find that that principle stated here taught here. First, he tells them to put off this slothful complacency this being content with the ABCs of the Christian religion we we talked but last time when he referred to the elementary principles of the few verses back to that word. They’re meant that is the word they use and great for the ABCs for their alphabet and we would say in English the ABCs is like you know you learn your ABC’s in kindergarten or first grade. And he’s talking about the ABCs about the Messiah about Christ to look again at chapter 6 first one first part. Therefore leaving the elementary teaching about the Christ. Now why is he say that they should leave that as a matter of that these are unimportant that they’re done with them they have no use for the elementary teaching about Christ of the ABCs about Christ will let’s think according to picture that I gave you about we learn our ABCs case the very beginning of your academic career wherever that was in at whatever point in your life when you’re a little in your learn your ABC’s they why are you learning your ABC’s this not just so that you can spout all of them off in order I it’s that you can read, write that’s the whole point So there is a sense in which we leave them now to think about it every one of us here if you look at your Bibles or if you look at the hymnal or song she you use your ABC’s the that you didn’t think in those terms while using my ABCs. This morning. Think that probably because you don’t even think about just like you know when you drove here this morning. He did a lot of things we didn’t realize if I asked you to detail for me all the things she did. We drove you wouldn’t be able to as he did without thinking if you will. They were thinking you just remind can do those things by happened we we don’t only read a word here will look at the word leave things and look at Ellie Avie it will do that we did when we are first rate we don’t now but we still use our minds use our ABCs so in what sense do we leave our ABCs we move on to reading well when we were say in first grade the ABCs for a segment of time was everything what him every had about if you are not those of us who were in school whatever cut classroom others homeschooler private or public school classroom you have as big ABCs up you know or maybe a big banner a some like that out of order at the top of the class or something you know it and in so you had in front of you the ABCs this was everything for you. Okay it was something to you you’re working your way through. And yet the to the L know the you know that one letter at any child can is is the time where you have to push the envelope that he get some of them mixed up toward the end. And then you finally get I know my half I know my ABCs see that was our focus was everything for us then because it’s all we knew we did not read the that was an end in itself for that time had you when you were in high school were you still having classes on ABCs. I hope some maybe the but you know by that time ABCs seemed like ancient history I was 12 years ago, but in reality you can leave them you see you left the them as the focus of your study you left them at the end. The goal of your study. And that’s we talk about here the ABCs about the Messiah about Christ. It’s not that were ditching them it’s that were not focusing on them as our goal study it will you learn the when we were spiritual babies now it’s time to move on. Illustration to read if you will on to maturity using is the terminology one commentator explained it this way talking about leaving the ABCs of Christ the point is that the beginning is not a stopping place. It is the door to progress and the springboard to achievement this he is just the door that were we start if you don’t stay there it would be sad if our educational system had to where you had 12 years of ABCs you we know really where but that’s not the point easy it was just the beginning. Just start now he’s not the writer is not going to go over those in and teach them again he’s confident that the same word of God that has both spiritual milk and spiritual meat will be enough for them they had a foundation related these guys are building on the foundation we talked about the elementary principles about Christ is the ABCs of the Messiah, the Christ as he says here, literally this phrase is the word of the beginning of the Christ. And we keep say in this idea the word popping up throughout this letter he spent a lot of time in the first section developing that in the end then at the end their middle chapter 14 the first section the he really hammered into us that idea of the work. And now he’s building on the but think about this way. Regarding our spiritual lives in acts two River theater there preached to the multitude and he preached to them. The ABCs of Christ as need fasting go back and read might do that later today but I can read that is really, really need to see those is ABCs of Christ what they are but were told by Luke that about 3000 of them were say a wonderful, wonderful time of people coming into the faith and did they stay with their spiritual ABCs. What happens little bit later in the chapter. Chapter 2 verse 42 when they do every day. There are several things that you one of those purgatory talk about is that the set of the apostles teaching every day. They were learning from God’s word through his teachers everyday because they were they knew they needed to be built up in this they were content with just staying there with the spiritual ABCs they had to move on and keep growing. So if this first point is growth and maturity means forward progress and now number two growth and maturity happens by being carried along toward that goal would see that at the end of first the rest verse one and verse two growth and maturity happens by being carried along toward that goal. That goal of maturity look with me there the verses one to get therefore leaving the elementary teaching about Christ last press on to maturity not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works of faith toward God instruction about watching the laying on of hands and the resurrection of the dead and eternal judgment. Now first what you see that he’s not a detached bystander or somebody who’s is up here Mister spiritual looking down on them okay but on your grammar hats first let us first second third person first person plural or singular baritones at a first-person plural it means he includes himself right with them first-person speaker and them he says. Let us easy as like he’s taking the by hand and in the list let’s go guys, aces let us press on now, literally it means. Let us be carried forward and to be fair entities only got this right. He were to be carried forward. It’s passive voice that means that we you are not the ones that do it and some these translations mine included which usually I like to have it as more active like let us press on. That’s always let us be carried think about the second peer 121 appear there when he is describing for us. How is that the profits wrote the Scriptures he says Yearwood what was moved along by whom the Holy Spirit right they were moved along so that they will what he wanted them to write the Holy Spirit had this ministry in them such an and he Peter pictures it as if the spirit pick them up and carry them in their writings that they wrote holy Scripture exactly what the right Says in dictating to them. He moved them along using their their skills their knowledge their understanding of Scripture and all it to write Scripture also think back in our letter here keepers when chapter 1. There’s talk about the Lord Jesus Christ and he presented him as the creating sustainer it is not only did Jesus create everything. But we we said back there verses 10 to 12 that they got the picture was that Jesus is the one who was moving all of creation for to its appointed end what God has destined for what he is ordained for it. Jesus is the one who is moving that did he not only created everything is not only the one who holds it all together Colossians the Hebrews 1 he’s also the one who is moving it to its appointed end ACC this idea of of God is the one who moves moves things forward and he doesn’t he just implies that here, but we know from other Scriptures that is the spirit of God who is the dying and how of the believers obedience he’s the cause of spiritual growth were back in Romans eight verse 14 he said believers that they are glad of the Holy Spirit. I also that a writer is is going to be showing us throughout this whole book that the new covenant is superior to the old covenant. And so it taking us back to in our minds to the new covenant think about Ezekiel 36 he there we are promised is one of the new covenant blessings Ezekiel 3627 God promises this I will put my Spirit within you and cause you to walk in my statutes it is God’s Spirit who causes obedience who causes spiritual growth is that apply here were going to see next time we get to verse four that there a lot of people in churches who appeared to be is he will say then partakers of the Holy Spirit I e-mailed the Holy Spirit is really alive in them and then I just, going with the flow of the church. Doing with the church does following will what he’s saying here is implies that it is the spirit of God is the dynamic how in this but they might appear to be a mighty partakers of the spirits ministry. But the spirit of God is not the one who is moving them forward and you know it’s the spirit if you see them moving forward in their spiritual progress if you don’t see them moving forward. And you know the spirit of God is not you know that he’s not in them dwelling in him and in the one who is exerting his power his influence to grow them up in Christ and were defined we get to the passage that instead of moving forward direction moving backward. They’re moving away from Christ to the point where they’re going back to those people who were standing at Christ child saying crucified him. They moved backward he’s deserving of death rather than we’re deserving of death he died place in so the product of this being moved forward being carried forward by God’s Spirit is spiritual maturity. That’s the goal. That’s what you should see is a Christian’s life he wants to move them forward from focusing on Asia Cipolla six of the ABCs of the Christ there there’s more to that of the six for some reason were particularly appropriate for them probably some things that were on their minds questions. Maybe that they had or something in the cities not only again the foundation is just that foundation just another picture another way of talking about the NBCC because in a sense ABCs our our foundation for reading right we have to have them before going to be a re-kisses him and lay the foundation again because foundations are only laid once your he had that foundation laid in as I teach you will remind you of those things that make up that foundation. So were moving forward Calvin puts it well does the foundation is laid for the sake of the building. The words the foundation does exist for its own sake think about it and if you ever taken at a immature to look at the foundation and it was no building is why this is a great foundation in a little to add silly right anything about back now several years ago, see when the tornado took out the entire neighborhoods if you got to see you that some the neighborhoods always love for foundations and the point was wasn’t things will look at these wonderful foundations was a last know the point was sat the rebuild see the foundation does exist for its own sake it exists so that we can build upon it the building. Now he lists all of these these six elements he doesn’t so in three pairs the first one in the first pairs repentance from dead works, and what is repentance revisited the changing of one’s mind and attitude about something that results in leaving turning away from that something unusual government repentance from sin is not about repentance from dead works he’s talking about. But the These are Jewish believers. Remember they grew up in unbillable Judaism by that I mean they were using the Old Testament as they’re looking at it as how to get say how to how to be pleasing to God it was never meant to save anyone as they were misusing it. And so they were used to the fact and when they came to Christ with the is a the they changed their mind, their attitude toward this a biblical view of how to be saved apart from repentance from dead works something that they have done them some commentators say by now when I thought about works of the law here I think the wrong with they’re doing. So it appears that they’re doing is that they’re reading later church history see have these guys get saved over here from unbillable Judaism they can’t they get say they turned away from that. But then what happens is these commentators are actually going forward into Christian history when the church was primarily Gentile in the reading that back into this text but the wrong because we just need to think in terms of these first century Jewish believers that they grew up with unbillable Judaism the they repented of that and I think that’s what he’s talking about because this whole letter that’s what it’s about their tempted to go back to that he’s trying to show them now go back to that he’s talking about those dead works though the works that lead to death because if you try to earn God’s favor try to earn salvation through any kind of works and for them it was particularly the works of the law they will be to the because that is not how God is pleased is only pleased by faith faith in him and particular faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. This frees is used again for is dead works use again later letter refers to the superiority of Christ way of salvation over the it error of unbillable Judaism later in chapter 9 verse 14 he’s going to say this that those who follow Jesus for those who follow him the blood of Christ will cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God he said of those dead works or are other kinds of works your your reading back into Gentile Christianity residency of these were Jews the early church was primarily Jewish at the beginning had and in these we know these guys were Jews thing about what Paul said in Romans nine 3132 Israel pursuing a law of righteousness did not arrive at that law why because they did not pursue it by faith that is the were by works they stumbled over the stumbling stone the he’s talking about here in this larger letter he’s talking about those works that lead to death doing the works of the law is a way to earn God’s favor he they had repented of that he’s not going over it again Tell repentance isn’t along that never should be along in the believer it won’t be alone it is accompanied by faith he says next the second part of this first pair faith toward God repentance and faith form a unity they always go together. Now sometimes the billable writers will save speak of one of the other or vice versa is because they are you know the readers understand the other one they’ll mentioned that he Jesus the beginning of his ministry look at Mark want becomes a says the time is at hand need to do what repented and believed the gospel believe is the both of you form a unity and so they’re together in here that faith. We must point out where I go into detail about faith because he has a lot more in the letter to talk about faith. He faith is not just belief in God is not just believing that God exists, or that Jesus is God that he faith does include that. But faith also includes the promises that that faith believes the promises of God and in the letter to the Hebrews their promises of salvation promises of glory and promises of rest all is the gap lump them all into the promises of salvation. He faith trusts in God’s promise and we come to a second pair what you mean by instruction about Washington’s and this is little more interesting something work because scratch her head were like okay what is about some people believe that there’s a lot of different views among the going to a mall on some believe that this refers to the different kinds of baptisms that there were familiar to first century Jewish believers there was did the baptism of Jewish proselytes of Gentiles become a Jew one of things is baptizing them it was John’s baptism, Baptist there was baptism in Jesus name for those who book the biblical believers baptism. And then there was spirit there is spirit that they say lately succubi here’s these different kinds of Baptist because this is and is is plural so that probably means well maybe but I don’t think likely first will uses a different now similar but different than the and the words used elsewhere for Baptist also this word is used later in Hebrews 910 is used also in Mark seven versus 4 1/4 Jewish ceremonial washings I think that’s what he has in mind. But these Jewish ceremonial washings at the top of the first they were different kinds of washings prescribed in the old covenant neglect the Old Testament you’ll find a different kinds of washings prescribed in the writer he is alluding to the teaching that those washings and Judaism were replaced by the superior washing in Christ’s blood. That’s a blessing. Under the new covenant is a said later in chapter 9 verse two is going to use this word for Jewish washings it teaches there the blood of Christ shall cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God, but it would be a greater cleansing than those Jewish washings that was verse 14 the new covenant promise more the ritual cleansing it would provide for both moral and spiritual cleansing a superior cleansing that was what they originally understood when they were first taught the ABCs of the gospel this is a might to go back into again Ezekiel recorded got promise about this in Ezekiel 36 again on the new covenant verses 2425 for I will take you from the nations gather you from all the lands into the and bring you into your own land then I will sprinkle clean water on you and you will be clean. I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. And then later in verse 29 he says. I will save you from all your uncleanness talking there about spiritual cleansing he’s not talking about you know the right of baptisms the ordinance of baptism some but spiritual cleansing and he says that what happens to us in Christ the cleansing we have by his blood is superior to all those washings he saying we recover that back when you were say Amerman on paired with that now is the laying on of hands this little bit tougher because it is a really talk about it very much to talk about all the rest letter and I wonder what is it me I think because no one the letter is about Jesus are largely about Jesus being superior as a high priest to deliver the order and coupled here with these ceremonial washings. I think he has in mind the laying on of hands. It took place under the old covenant under the Levitical sacrificial system but the thing about never the region in Leviticus and in a few were doing it send in your you bring you know animal to be sacrificed to do it but your hand. Recognizing that the samples die in my place in it would be sling I think he has even more so in mind the idea that on the day of atonement is talk about high priest here on the day of atonement the high priest would put his hands on the animal before he slid them Leviticus 1621 and I think that’s we talk about the laying on of hands it is vague enough it might mean some of the things that to me that it’s good the context really really well the context of the letter of being about Jesus being superior it in his sacrifice is superior to the Levitical sacrifices and also being coupled here with the the laying on of the Surmontil washings that one last pair briefly the third pair comes from a future eschatological perspective of their about the resurrection of the dead and eternal judgment Jewish leaders that they like the Pharisees did believe in the resurrection by the teaching he’s talking about is that there is no resurrection apart from Jesus resurrection he can go to first Corinthians 15 of versus 20 to 22 for that there’s no resurrection of Jesus resurrection he and in in the second point while all men will be resurrected not all will be resurrected in life is the next part of this pair some will be resurrected to eternal judgment external help eternal punishment and that leaves this verse on a note for this little paragraph on a note of seriousness paving the way for his discussion of apostasy the universe for your third point we said first that growth and maturity means forward progress second growth and maturity happens by being carried along toward that goal and now third growth and maturity is accompanied by the right attitude toward God faith and maturity is accompanied by the right attitude toward God but the first three in this we should do is cut from he says is going to proceed with this instruction on to their maturity and we will he will lead them take them by hand were all the go together I’m already growing and maturing, now pull you along and lead you lovingly into maturity. If governments any moving forward to maturity is due to God’s grace the right attitude toward God and submission for the right attitude toward God is submission to what he is will for you in that process if you think about it though wearer things breakdown as we find that process being very difficult it’s not the way we would and you know a lot of times the process doesn’t make any sense to us. We look at the Lord I can’t make sense is no painful. Yes I get that
oh that sometimes can be painful. But if I could just make sense out of it. I can handle the pain is know know know you’re looking at the wrong way you just trust me it doesn’t have to make sense to you. You just know that I him and sovereign control. I am moving all things forward to the end that I have appointed for them and I am good and that’s what you need to focus it doesn’t have to make sense to you in heaven, I imagine things will make sense to us if not everything a lot of it probably will is will see things now from them from God’s perspective right now he says trust me River book is by faith trust my promises. Trust me, we must learn to be content with the process if governments to review steadily maturing in your spiritual growth or are you spiritually stagnant if you are then he’d this man’s call. Let’s move forward and literally. Let’s be carried forward carried along toward maturity towards spiritual progress doesn’t mean Lego like, he said he’ll take it that way of his him by: Neil at the way you just carry you forward it mean that all this is more like Philippians 2 verses 12 and 13 that work out your salvation with fear and trembling like puzzles to yes you have something to do many as this is why for his God was it working of the willing to work according to his good pleasure I’m supposed to work because you don’t try. You will we don’t we don’t know how exactly that happens we know that it does. And that’s all we we trust: close by reading to you please leading into verses four through six don’t to chew on these are tackle, Lord willing.
Heber Sixers for for the case of those who have once been enlightened, and have tasted the heavenly gift, and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit and have tasted the good word of God and the powers and the age to come and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance since they can crucify to themselves the son of God and put him to show

If you would turn within your Bibles to Hebrews chapter 5 this morning we plan to include chapter 5 and this is a passage that oftentimes gets overlooked because it. By this time into reading through the book is think of book you’re anxious to get to chapters chapters 6 and seven because it is a lot there is controversy and things like that and as of the oftentimes Passover pre-quickly and it’s that’s unfortunate because this passage is a lot in it for us law wonderful truth in it the Red Sea. This morning I like you to think with me for a few minutes long this was considering what would be necessary if we were to participate in an athletic competition and maybe even to become a professional athlete I’m you I assumed we would all agree that we don’t just up and go do something like that right like a marathon they a really long by grace rockclimbing inventor dry winter golf tourney ministers like that a yield just say okay let’s all just had out here right now and where does not run 26 miles and the regular one of his resurrection but then I’m him that I would not be that once made to him. There are things that are necessary in order to prepare for it. But we need personal you goal at a goal such as he will run a marathon this number Google it mean we actually mean of their goal would be I want to complete a marathon in actual run the whole thing and that would be Google or other media like to finish in the top 75% favor that be pretty good old needed the top 99% effective be happy at all and next we we need. We need proper nutrition to any those type of event certainly demanding on the body and so it requires that we fuel body properly the proper nutrition or any energy for the event a lot of energy on were also the need to build but as we are preparing for this build strong muscles from whatever you might need to build strong ligaments mean that all these things nutrition is going to contribute to. Additionally just giving us the energy for it. We also need regular exercise faith that rental a lot of it to his if you want to be good at something like that you actually win or her complete a long journey like a marathon. Need a lot of exercise. Regular exercise is not like okay well this marathon is six months it ended in advance and in over the week prior old but try to run the Lord is him and you have to do to get after now and work hard at it every day and never we don’t just know the real is ill just you know put on your exercise closed but her sneakers and just start running until you drop write SSO work either. That the law practice is going to be involved. Whether you know it. If you’re if it’s golf. Practice your swing and your your pots and things like that are it’s a swimming event in your practice. Not only are your strokes and he covered where competition your input in a have a you seen the they did it turn into vegetable flip taking the kick off to the going and stuff it. I never tried and I’m not going to drown. But you need that takes a lot of practice you get the tiny meteor rates. Whether swimming or running or biking, where it you got it you hate yourself and you don’t run a marathon by a in of just sprinted you know that he won’t go work for a in you sprinting you have to practice the the the start you know, can you can you kick off in of writing if the timing right everything and if your hate your paced around that right and the skill that’s involved it you to become proficient at all these various things are going going into you being successful at whatever you’re trying to do not using a biking therefore let me shift gears you some of you wonder why you just start making much progress in your spiritual life maybe you’re not gaining ground against sent into it. It knocks you down in you wanted defeated, but you just can’t making headway many in their spiritual duties on the reading of Bible study your Bible prayer those kinds of things. You just need you you plan to and they just did in remembrance and prayer face I, start praying every day, per six hours or for damages awarded in on it we do that right little extreme, but what happens it would just kind of fizzled now that last for many years you’re not comfortable sharing your faith in you know and you think well I’m just nervous and I only want to say I get tongue tied I just you know I know little bullheaded, and then there the to be condemned to hell because I blew it in him we think like maybe you wish that you could really learn the local theology me get a grasp on on the Scriptures and and understand various doctrines and and him would find in Scripture and what they mean you can see you bought a book on theology and you got all the way through the preface was all symptoms of a more basic problem see but that the goal we really need to do is become a mature Christian to become a mature Christian.that is very demanding and lifelong project it isn’t something that you just you know do a few weeks a year later and I took this discourse discipleship and now mature Christian Edward that what he knows can be helpful for that in but it’s more than just like a demanding athletic event it requires proper nourishment rigorous training regular practice and you have to: writer to the Hebrews to use these familiar images of these pictures of an athletic event at all that goes into that in order to show his readers where they have gone wrong with the problem is a to show them why they are in such spiritual danger zone we find ourselves now beginning is his third warning passage. Verse 11 doesn’t take us on into chapter 6 he’s warning them because of problems that he has seen in their flock selected follow with me Hebrews chapter 5 and will pick up verse 1030 talking about Jesus and his qualifications as high priest saying been designated by God as a high priest according to the world of Melchizedek. Now verse 11 concerning him. We have much to say and it is hard to explain sent you, all of hearing for though by this time you want to be teachers Indonesia giver someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God immunocompetent and will and not solid food River one who protects only milk is it not accustomed to the word of righteousness because isn’t they the solid food is for the mature who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good evil. Therefore leaving elementary teaching about Christ let us press on to maturity not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works and faith toward God of structured about Washington laying on of hands in the resurrection the dad and eternal judgment in this we shall do that if God permits we saw last time that author made a transition he was talking in his first nine verses about the qualifications of Jesus as our high priest he had to be human entity called and then something it was unique to Jesus. He was devoted to God will never steer the end of that it makes one of his really skillful transitions guys really good as a writer and he says that that Jesus was called according to appointed according the order of Melchizedek

Was a good morning to all of if you would turn within your Bibles to Hebrews chapter 5 this morning we will be looking at the rest verse seven through verse 10 at one ask you what is salvation for those religious terms that we have we, all know what it means but maybe really don’t know what the but for some people salvation is getting in the habit and for other people it’s avoiding hell in both of those groups see a crisis point if you will in salvation for them the crisis point is when they extended before the gate of heaven and ineluctable will tell jokes about how do they stand for the gate of heaven and never the way he to see if they qualify to getting a with you know the Scriptures you know that he wait until that point he would’ve looked miss the real opportunity salvation is about a crisis point. Yes, there is a point in time in which a person does come to faith in Christ. Some of us know when that time is in some of us have our time what pinning it down to an exact date but we know the did happen but if we minimize salvation to the point of having Justice this crisis point, even if that crisis point is the one in which you come to know the Lord Jesus if you minimize it to that. Then you can easily degenerate into is getting a ticket to heaven. That’s not the essence of biblical salvation are writers around the letter it is going to develop but this very the role of very needy definition concept of salvation is a take 13 chapters to develop what would salvation units and it’s not just a crisis of the writers in the New Testament, take all about the crystallizes them into different thoughts and is one of those a predominant thought is that salvation is an entirely new kind of like the idea of the size his life thing about the apostle John and one of the the most famous verses in our age and John 316 I okay those who believe we are told inherit what eternal life like not a ticket it is more it is blotters and the crisis point later. John will a record. Jesus said that he came to we might have life that we might have it abundantly ACC there is this and much more there than just this ticket to heaven 90 later much later John in his first epistle going to talk to the house we passed out of this state of death into state of life initiative talk about their in chapter 3 how that line a apply the Lord your each of us who believe easy this is. It’s a much richer concept and we sometimes will attribute it idea of salvation. But that was the apostle John Paul use some slightly different terminology to describe salvation he said that the person is saved they become an entirely new creation. Says that the been re-created they are a new creation and River he said the old things have passed away. He him the new things have come I see so this is easy it’s a broader concept than what sometimes we in our culture today relegate to this this religious terms salvation. It’s more than a writers and talk about the same old not only the gold expressway these new things coming he’s been talking chapter 6 about these better things which he says accompany salvation that he is confident of his readers he considers believers Peter calls are salvation a living whole is an inheritance that we enjoy the even now in part, and then in the future in heaven will receive the fullness of our salvation all of it that’s been promised for us comes then but is he living whole James and the other apostles describe it is a new sort of life that gives rise to which a genuine desire for obedience and faithful doing of good works is you think about James talking about the faith that is that it doesn’t have it doesn’t give rise to it works. So the idea is that in salvation. We are saved from disobedience unto obedience and is is not just a matter of okay well it. I got my ticket to heaven. I find and then you know if we think about that. Just picture the ticket have an illustration as such a poor description of salvation really a better description is what is being studied during the Sunday school our programs progress that’s a better picture of what was salvation is yes there is a point in which you enter, but there is that the whole journey in that is is the fruit of the salvation is the solution look at it is does it a point in time but did write the book is if okay you here’s what happened is in the city of destruction in he believes he does that again any Zen and in a into the store because are so much more to it than salvation isn’t just about getting have all these things are expressed throughout this letter to the Hebrews I mention of why is this important well in enterprises today the writer is going to tell us that Jesus has become the source of eternal salvation is so if we have the wrong idea about salvation we can miss it entirely we find that’s what happens to people that they they make a profession of faith because was presented to them is just this ticket to heaven view and anything okay well hey I’ve done what I need to do whatever that might be found in they go about their life and nothing ever changes. Nothing ever comes of and they think that it’s really just a in I bought a ticket later on I’ll get in my get some of the people in this church and is writing the last they fell away from think they can understand what real salvation it was just another religious terms. Another religious idea if it’s keeping the law and there is salvation in Jesus the, pick which one you know what all roads lead to heaven and him so they fell away his readers are in danger of missing Darrell that’s what is writing this letter what has happened to others he doesn’t want to happen to them and so he writes a letter that is filled with both very strong warning but also very your precious encourage and he weaves both of them for a letter we finish this passage today their verse 10 is what happened next is is going to now lead us into his third warning passage and for most people it’s the biggest phonebook law at and he’s going to address this problem selected follow with misery Hebrews chapter 5 and will back up verse one 4110 Hebrews 51 for every high priest taken from among men is appointed, on behalf of men in things pertaining to God in order to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sin you diligently with the ignorant and misguided as he himself also is beset with weakness and because of it. He is obligated to offer sacrifices for sins as for the people so also for some knowing take the honor to himself but receives it ways called by God even as Aaron was also Primates did not glorify himself so as to become a high priest but he said to him thou art my son today I have begotten the disease is also another passage thou art a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek beginning of Jesus in the days of his flesh he offered of the prayers and supplications with him climbing into years the one able to save him from that and he was hurt because I a little he was a son he learned obedience from the things which he suffered it having been made perfect he became to all those who obey him the source of eternal salvation been designated by God as a high priest according to the order of of in verses one through 10 the author had as it is telling us three main bases talking about these qualifications for high priest which Jesus had to attain but also how is his qualifications were greater than any high priest is ever lived. First he tells the first three verses that God high priest must be human and then at 436 that God high priest must be called and in seven through 10 talked about how Jesus as God’s glory your high priest was devoted to God’s will that is not a requirement as the first to or but something that Jesus did it was was you who will it be a requirement of his higher-order order because in so when you’re in the midst of this the third point that Jesus was devoted to God’s will for it continue that you the last time as we started looking into that. It’s all that they were before things this passage that the author is telling us about Jesus is greater high priest is one was devoted to God will he first told us that Jesus condition then Jesus steadfastness Jesus fervor in our look at the fourth pointless to make the results of Jesus devotion to God will there be three results to that the results of Jesus devotion the first result we find there the end of for 70 back and read the whole first in days of his flesh he offered of both prayers and supplications with loud crying into years to one able to save him from death and years will refocus and he was heard because of his piety it we talked earlier about Jesus the week what are others on that Jesus was in the guard when he was there praying specifically a lot of prayers throughout his is ministry but in the author is focusing on those where he’s asking God to save him not from dying but through death and it would be very the garden focusing it was there they had does this for for prayers and supplications crying out to his father he prayed to be delivered from this group he prayed that God will with now were told here in verse seven that he was her Jesus is used that before your we talked about it. I think it you currently it. It’s a reference to the fact that God answered his prayers that it wasn’t just that with her dad and I may or may not if it means that God answered his prayers in author is telling is why he was is because we might translate this on account of his piety or his devotion to God’s will. Jesus taught us to pray according to God’s will think about Matthew 610 tell he prayed the garden Matthew 2639 not my will but thine be done. And then John the apostle would remind his readers. Many years later in his first epistle in your member first John 514 if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us the prayer which is answered prayer that seeks God’s will and just report citing Michelle always will as well executed. Scriptures you know that he will that God wills for some to glorify the Jesus be glorified in his church that is church growing beatified buildout the people from the faith and is tells all the specifics about who is doing in the faith and things like that. We do know what you to pray accordingly that’s how Jesus is the prayer that gets on the same page with what God desires to accomplish us getting on same page with him. They are translation probably has one of these words that that he was on account of his piety his reverence is reverent submission was godly fear those all the translations but they what the author is trying to draw out here as we look at the usage of this in the greater context is that Jesus was devoted to God will his devotion to God’s will. That’s what these words piety and reverence and now with the really talking about is a devotion to God’s will and that word. It’s it represents a concern for God’s honor I want God to be glorified in it is one commentator put it to watchfulness of ourselves so that we avoid whatever might displease God knows I don’t want to allow myself to to do those things the displease God a watch over myself and careful so we can say that it is a watchful careful devotion to God will the idea that he sees expressing here as we look at it in this setting. That’s with Jesus ultimate underlying commitment will not my will but thine be done. The first result of his devotion to God was that you his prayers were heard second now were looking verse eight, although he was a son he learned obedience from the things which he suffered the second he became qualified to serve as our high priest you look at it verse eight irrecoverably the reason verse nine will see but the idea there is that he became qualified to serve as our high priest says there that Jesus suffered although he was a son, not because he was you misunderstand it’s not because he was son assigned but it was although it we really should transit is what although he was son because that fits the context better you can translate a son but really think if you think about it. He’s talking about Jesus as son in his unique sense in which he has been with the father as son in that relationship with father forever for from eternity past, although he was prior to this. The garden he was a son prior to his suffering he was son think about chapter 1 member throughout that he starts off describe the baptized about it God revealed himself through the the profits to the fathers, but has revealed himself in a or in son because Jesus belongs to the class of one he is the only one that it is son in that sense so he belongs to. This is superior class if you will as the son of God in a very unique sense a son in a way that none of us who are believers in are sons of God where sons with a small as he is signed with what we don’t English with a capital S, is a senior although he was signed he was a part of the unique class he learned if he has eternally existed as some always they will be us. We think about it will be seen that Jesus was without sin. And we know that he always obeyed the father in any do that’s Constanta, slow but that for what I just said about Jesus being a different category actually helps the sound you think about the way how is it we learned obedience when we start from a blank slate the that the innovations such a big dwarf with a slight that’s messed up. I will. The cubed there’ll soon in the DAV had to teach her children disobedience you know the Lady okay now here say no, mommy to do this a number determined by this comes automatically extended little natures so we start out in this in this spirit of the disobedience that’s that’s why we are that’s what we do in and we learn by moving from disobedience to obedience that we get there will take the toward chapter 12 we find there that is through enduring unpleasant consequences I him conjure the term consequences wanted words you hate to hear right been instrumental in areas like that the law. We go from disobedience unpleasant consequences to be it’s a but she Jesus is not from our class or category if you is from this other son in the unique sense okay so he’s different than us in this learning if you will is different. He began his earthly life not like we in beginning with disobedience he began his earthly life the way he always been for eternity past of the end different easy cc entirely different from us our Seder had to me are high priest had not just, cover over sense. Like the other high priest. To say God hand of judgment until a greater sacrifice and he was the it’s and he started from obedience he never deviated from Paul said for these 28 he humbled himself by being obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross the okay John Answer the Question If He Is Sinless Why Did He Need to Learn Obedience Will a Couple Reasons. One It Was Necessary That Are High Priest Suffer Temptation in Order to Sympathize with Us River Back Chapter 4 Verse 15 and to Sympathize with a High Priest Had to If You Will Learn Obedience to Suffer the Is Still Obeyed Only through to the Very All the Way to the Point the Right Second Friend to Die in Our Place He Had to Live in Perfect Obedience to God’s Law, God Will Because We Don’t Easy Because We Don’t Obey Him. We Need Somebody Who Didn’t Obey Him to Dine with Us. And so That We Might Receive His Righteousness Result of His Will He Feels Temptations That Suffering That We Might Have To See If That Is Credited to Our Account Romans 519 Four at Us through the One Man’s Disobedience at the One Man’s Disobedience the Many Were Made Sinners of Yellow Us Even so, through the Obedience of the One Is Christ. The Meeting Will Be Made Righteous the Ones Disobedience Will Consumers Than Once a Week the Righteous the Father Will That Jesus Take the Path Suffering They Might Be a Fit High Priest for Sinners He Had to Face Specific, Concrete Situations As a Human As He and Experience the Situations with Their Trial or Temptation, Sling to Sympathize with Us and Said Goodbye the Computer Science As He Learned What Happened Is He Manifested His Character Is Character of Obedience He He Manifested That in His Humanity and See His He Sees Sufferings As They Bore down upon Him. They He Drew out His Resolute Determination Thing about the Sponge Had If You Use Sponge to Clean up the Kitchen Enter Bathroom Wherever You and in You Know Sponge Is Designed Is a Water but Where Was in the Water and Squeeze out Respond Anger, Anxiety Is Constantly but When the Pressures of Life You with Jesus When He If You Will Squeeze What Came out Was the Purest What Is There Is No One. Ever Anywhere There to Make the Watermark Jesus Flesh out in His Humanity. When He Had Always Done in His Did Give His He Learned Obedience He Came He Submitted Ours Himself to the Trials and Temptations That We Experience and He Flesh out in His Humanity See It Never Obeyed God As a Human before Having Taken on Humanity He Flesh out What He Always Done in the Is in the Picture with You Isaiah 58 with This Really Wasn’t of the Test to See If Jesus Could Do It or Not It Is Predicted Several Hundred Years before He Lived and Suffered Isaiah 50 Would Find His Steadfast Determination His Attitude toward Obedience in These Verses Isaiah 50 Verse Five the Lord Yahweh Has Opened My Your and I Was Not Disobedience nor Did I Turned Back I Gave My Back to Those Who Strike Me and My Cheeks to Those Who Pluck out the Beer I Did Not Cover My Face from Humiliation and Spitting the Lord Yahweh Helps Me. Therefore I Am Not Disgraced. Therefore, I Have Set My Face like Flint and I Know That I Should Not Be Extreme Those Prophesied of the Servant of the Lord Jesus Hundreds of Years before He Suffered Is No Question Way It Always Does What You Will Always Do. Whether He Is Divine or Human Is Both Say You They Know This Phrase Learned from the Things Which He Suffers Convincing Them. There’s Actually a Play on Words Is Learning from Suffering and It Has a Long History in Greek If You Take the the Infinitives You to Learn and to Suffer Great a Run My Thing-If It and You Agree to Pick up on How Do They Define That Their Literature. They Talk about Enough Learning for Suffer by the Writers Using That Same Idea Here but Is Using It Differently Because We Learn Because We Suffer What from Our Own Center-Right but You Suffer It’s Because of Sent and A Lot Of That Is Wrong since We Jesus Learned If You Will He Suffered Because of the Sins of Others. He Suffered for to Pay the Penalty for the Sins of the Difference Is Still Play on Words of the Mistaken among so Results He Said in One His Prayers Were Heard but You He Became Qualified to Serve As Our High Priest and Now Number Three He Became the Source of Eternal Salvation of the Verse Nine and Having Been Made Perfect He Became to All Those Who Obey Him the Source of Eternal Salvation Is Received. Jesus Did Not Move His Sister Having Been a Perfect Move from a State of Moral Imperfection to That of Perfection Is Always Talking about Here See This Idea of Both to Perfect Still It Is Drawing from We Just Said He Having Learned Obedience Even This Sinless We Worry Seen This Idea of a to Perfect Refer to Jesus Back in Chapter 2 Verse 10 Says That That It Was Fitting for the Father to Perfect the Author of Their Salvation Perfect a Perfect Him and We Sit Back and We Looked at That Is the Idea Was More of Completing His Is Qualifications to Be High Priest in Service High Priest and That’s Exactly We Talking about Here. The Qualifications of Jesus Thinking That to Be Are High Priest Also Said Back Then in Chapter 2 Verse 10 That That Whole Idea of the to to Complete His Qualifications to Perfect Them If You Will Have To Do It Draws upon an Image from Our Words in the Old Testament Where the the Priests As He Would Be Dead for His Ministry. They Would Use Words That Were for to Fill His Hands like You Know Is Priestly Garments Okay and Whatever Told He Needed to Carry out His Priestly Service and It Was Even Used to Filling His Hands with the Sacrifices As He Was Going to Go in Even with Them on the Altar Are at Them As a No Wave Offers of His Filling His Hands Easy Was It Was 15 Him Preparing Him Qualifying Him to Serve As High Priest Is the Idea Here He Was Perfected and That’s It. This Flow from the Previous Point We Became Qualified to Be Our High Priest Jesus Accomplished God’s Will and Thus Became Fully Equipped to Serve As the Greater High Priest and As a Result in Says That He Is Become the Source of Salvation. He Is the Cause of Salvation He’s the One Responsible for He Is That the Source from Which Salvation Springs If You Will We Sit Back Again in Chapter 2 Verse 10 Were: the Author of Our Salvation but That Idea Had to Do with Him Being a Pioneering Savior the One Who Would Who Blazed the Trail of the If You Will Him to Heaven Blazed the Trail for Us Those Whom He Would Save a Would Lead Us As a Company and This Idea of Source Think in Terms to We Go to the End of the Story Relation 22 in the Eternal He Anything Pop in Your Mind about the Second Source Your What Is It That’s Going to Use Bring Forth Flow Forth from the Front of God and from the Lamb Really Refers Living Will. I the Water of Life for the Gives Life a Gives a That Water Then Nourishes the Tree of Life It’s Infinitely Use the Healing of the Nations Is Leads the See Jesus Is the Source of His Life’s Eternal Life They Here Calls Eternal Salvation Is the Source of That in Hebrews, Salvation Refers to Being Delivered from the Penalty for Sin Is Deliverance from the Wrath of God Sinners Deserve He Calls Eternal Salvation Because Is Not Just That Little Crisis Point If You Will Note That I Looked at It Hebrews and It Uses This Term Eternal like Your Eternal Salvation and How These These Uses of the Term Eternal the the Time Together for This Concept Read This to You and I’ll Give You to Again It to You Again with the Versus Ever This Is Reviewed Also Corrected for Those Particular That to His Writing Thinking That They Might Have As an Option to Obey the Law Okay Wednesday Obedience Is Important so Will the Back of a Law No Easy You Will Learn Anything That’s What Point Jesus Burned It All by Disobedience As a Result of That We Obey. But Three Results the Fourth Point There but It’s Not Result It’s Really a Summary and Transition a That’s the Fourth Point Summary Transition Is Verse 10 Are Writers Really Good at Making a Transition into the Next Topic If You Will or Is He a Shift Gears a Little Bit He’s He’s Going to Take up the Problem That We’ve Been Talking about in in in More Detail Is Going to to Fold Them Really Good and Us Cigarette but Fortunately Us to That
If you would, turn with me in your Bibles to Hebrews 5 and this morning we will look at most of verse seven.

One of our greatest fears might be the fear of the unknown. We oftentimes because of what might face us were not sure about that they can cripple a sick and crippled us into inaction. Shakespeare put it well on the lips of Hamlet passage. Most of us are familiar with he says that we grunt and sweat under a hearing life and as will a good way of summing up our existence is in the reason is because of the drain that we have of something that’s after death would’ve we don’t know what we need is a result in the human condition they don’t know what it is that awaits them on the other side of death. And of course as believers we have a lot more knowledge than the average person does about what comes but he goes on to say that he calls it the undiscovered country from whose born or you that destination no traveler returns is when someone dies they go on the other side of death. They don’t come back and tells you is really great over there were originally back over the no traveler returns it’s a puzzling the will and he says it makes us rather bear those ills we have is that which will put up with a lot that is horrible in his life rather than fly to others that we know the words those who have and have gone on before us. He talks about how we can be cowards when it comes to facing death because we don’t know what the other side it’s perfectly natural to fear the pain that’s involved in the process of dying is nothing wrong with that but we shouldn’t fear the ultimate outcome by faith we know that the very worst thing that could happen to us if we are a believer in Jesus Christ is that we will end up in the presence of the Lord will always be with it. So really, what is the worst thing for us is the best thing for us, it’s only worsened since of our ministry earthly ministry was cut short by really for the person who dies and is a believer is very best thing to happen to get to be with the Lord earlier than they might of thought of that. So playing with the word worst and really meaning best you would if God guaranteed you that you were going to go through what is really the worst possible and it was there was no if’s and’s or but’s about guaranteed you’re going to go through the most horrible the most horrifying experience of death possible. So there’s no fear of him exactly what’s coming. That’s what happened. Jesus answering talk about today. He sees is precisely what he experienced not only did the father ordained for Jesus to undergo the very worst thing possible the father even made it clear to him up for what he is going to him the foretaste of what is, for us if we know is that it if there is something back on the horizon. When one or not I had because we know the we will fear will tremble will worry and that’s usually worse than the It that way always it something in your life that you’re just. Just each you know what happens it when that I have for all young lady it wasn’t great maybe it hurt a lot but when as bad as you feared it would be and you something medical which will not right I want to know don’t overtreated it is not me out and it is how we did you imagine knowing ahead of time all of the horrors of Christ’s passion and then having to go through the knowing what’s coming knowing how bad it’s going to be in and having to endure the thinking deeply on these things is an important part of considering Jesus the high priest of our confession is important to think about how he handled those last hours of his life. Why because it’s a great help to our faith to our rest. Tomorrow the city would follow with me as I read Hebrews chapter 5 and will back up again, verse one the right choices for every high priest taken from among his appointed on behalf of men in things pertaining to God in order to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins he diligently with the ignorant and misguided since he himself also is beset with weakness and because of it he’s obligated to offer sacrifices for sins as for the people so also for himself and no one takes the honor to himself but receives the what is called by God even as Aaron what’s so also Christ did not glorify himself so as to become high priest but he who said to him thou art my son today I have begotten the disease is also in a message thou art a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek not talking the Jesus in the days of his flesh he offered up both prayer and supplication with laughing crying and tears to the one able to save him from death he was her because of his eye although he wasn’t some he learned obedience from the things which he suffered and having been made perfect he became to. However those who obey him the source of eternal salvation been designated by God as a priest according the order of his the writer has told us in the first verses of chapter number one we seen this already, God high priest must be human we saw that verse 123 a high priest must be human we saw him. The second point he’s making God high priest must be called verses four through six God high priest must be called in our but again this last point .3 Jesus as God is greater high priest was devoted to God will versus seven through 10th Jesus as God’s greater high priest was devoted to God’s will to first ones to notice this a Jesus condition but giver seven. Jesus condition in the days of his flesh to eat he’s introducing for us we talking about and he sees orienting us to this particular period of time in Jesus experience he showing us in this passage and in one is to to think on this as we work our way through it how how thoroughly Jesus identified without so keep that in mind as we work for it. Think about how he he so identified with us that he went through that the quirkiest suffering suffering far greater than any of us ever undergo they did as a human. Another incarnation here when Jesus became man in when he was born Mary he became man and then in the days of his flesh if you will but we saying here is that he’s identifying with our present condition our present existence the way we are now in so unit with all of our weaknesses and with with all of our human frailties he became like us John spoke about this time in your member what he said the word became what is/any get what he dwelt among us that Jesus still does having human nature he’s not suggesting here that Jesus no longer like after resurrection as a human nature we talking about is that in the days of his flesh is when Jesus became like us the way we are now not with without sin obviously but we are still perishable would not receive the first printed 15 that body which is imperishable which which will have over the Lord He he was like us in this perishable body a body that could die so the days of his initial earthly existence and his ministry were unique is how they were unique he lived in total dependence upon his father the father in heaven of the total dependence upon him. He lived as I said with the natural limitations and weaknesses of being human. Prior to his resurrection and we received importing to this in these terms by a person supplication she see how how he was so dependent upon his father that he turned to him with his knee into his greatest need was were going to see a when he was crying out to him. Jesus readily turned his father where it would find that throughout the Gospels you read you see how he will play for and weep over the condition of mankind. But with the writer has in mind here are not all the of the various players that Jesus pray during his ministry but he has a particular narrow, specific time
I think that is the garden against them just to talk to get 70 turn with me to Matt Mark 14 read couple passages about that experience, the refresh our memories on so Mark 14 relook verses 32 through 4214, verse 32 this is after week old Last Supper of the first Lord’s supper right before Jesus would be betrayed to the came to a place called her named Gethsemane and he said to his disciples sit here until I have prayed he took with him Peter and James and John McCain began to be very distressed and troubled he said to them my soul is deeply grieved to the point of God remain here and keep watch and he went a little beyond him and fell to the ground and began to pray that if it were possible the hour might pass him by and he was saying father all things are possible for the remove this cup from me yet not what I will without will and he came and found them sleeping and said Peter Simon you sleep could you not keep watch for one hour. Keep watching and praying that you may not come in to temptation. The spirit as well. But the flesh is weak. And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy were very heavy and he did not know what to answer him became the third time and set them pretty still sleeping and taking your rest. And it is enough the hour has come behold the Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of sinners arrives us be going behold the one who betrays me is he then turned to Luke 22 is whether verse is look at some something that is very appropriate your study. Luke 22 verse 44. Luke at this guy when Jesus was there praying in the garden and being in agony he was praying very fervently and his sweat became like drops of blood falling down upon the ground he turned back to you respond so we looked at Jesus condition. He was human just as we are in our our basic humanity is not human to be a center sinners honestly help cheeseburger sinners with his condition. Now let’s look at second point be Jesus steadfastness he says in the days of his flesh he offered up a prayer is in supplications how do we respond to attend pressure well if it’s really intense we do is we grow up in a ball right we get depressed we we turn inward on ourselves and we would Gruver are pitiful plight group will going. That’s typical for us but it was typical for Jesus you see because he was in total dependence upon his father what happened whatever intense pressure came upon him and written about the intensity of your its own little good at reading of the gospel accounts in but when the pressure came on on Jesus instinctively turned his father he offered up these prayers in supplications to him rather than doing what we do and turned in on ourselves this word offered up is the same word with worry seen and used of offering gifts and sacrifices of here as high priest he is going before God. And even as we offer up to this you were going before God intend we are were lifting up to him these requests just as we might offer up especially in the priestly days of the under the old covenant. They would offer up gifts and sacrifices they would sometimes it whole, sacrifice out of them may waive his different things within the same thing with our prayers were were lifting him up to God. And that’s what he is doing here. Now what’s interesting is in the garden he’s praying for God’s help to him. The one able to save him from that were defined in chapter 7 that Jesus is still pretty please not praying for himself says he’s able to say forever those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for sees continuing his high priestly ministry he’s praying for us right now in the next few moments. And on and on. He will pray continually and does pray continually for us a prayer is a fervent entreaty that’s make to God his word is used exclusively directed toward God is not something that used of the Write to you ask you for help. He supplication on the other hand, could be made to daughter could be made to someone else who’s in power. Some visibility to deliver what it is we needed and it’s basically it’s a humble request it’s a plea for help. It’s we go humbly Leeuwenhoek bowing and up before her like a great King and ask for help relieve mercy is that there’s a lot of overlap between the words what is it that Jesus prayed for your will he gives us a clue as to we stopped he prayed to him is able to save him from death, Jesus has identified with us to such an extent that he he actually was capable of dying and we don’t get as he was facing that he lived that these prayers to the father who is able to save him from death. But that is second which you notice now the third thing he tells us C Jesus fervor. Jesus for the days of his flesh he offered up of prayers in supplications how with chronic him with tears it wasn’t you we often picture Jesus in the garden unit you see those paintings you know from way back and you got is very serene and him and he’s he’s on his knees and he’s praying in front of maybe older and and are he’s just you know is that the beam of light and you in on you just need to Jesus he looks rosary that’s not all what the Scriptures teach us is a with very great heights life, crying and tears your review and we were told by Luke that he he with his his tears and sweat it was so intense it was like drops of blood falling to the ground he prayed fervently he was in extreme English extreme English needed to focus on he prayed to the one able to save him from death because he was facing that this is why I think it was the author is talking about when Jesus was praying the garden he may have prayed fervently at other times prayed with tears. At other times but that’s not what talk about suddenly faced death there in the garden he was brought face to face with the harbor of his passion he felt the full intensity of it. He felt the full brunt to temptation because the temptation was to turn aside from the path that the father had put him on and him. Here he is in the garden is on that Patty is done all the things he was to do in preparing his disciples in the book the Last Supper. He Judas goes out to betray him he’s in the garden praying and that the very next thing to come is horrible. The very next In the path that God put him on was the crap incantations one turns he prayed Lord if possible there’s any way to accomplish apply immediately turned aside the He is a very next thing was that his own father was reporters wrath out on his precious he would receive the downpour of God’s wrath of millions of sinners to initiate his sufferings, he received a preview of what was in store Jesus received a foretaste. Yes of the cruelty of near that was to come over the father was getting ready to do him was far worse and far, far harder to bear. Imagine the punishment of all the elect of all the ages concentrated within a matter of hours in poured out on one verse in the following him the wrath of God would follow him and we have to wave of divine displeasure. Yes Jesus a shepherd wept over him and sorrows, but now he wept because of what he faced he faced the punishment for all of those sinners he went for the penalty they deserved in the fullness of humanity he took on the fullness of humanity he wasn’t adjusted gross the sum of the heretics and in ancient they said even some today will say what was it you get really take on humanity and eight he was he just looked like human and not all in the fullness of humanity someone who could suffered someone who could he would receive the just punishment for the depth of human think about how the you are out of print I him and he received the just had I know is I know the depth of my heart and he knows he got to that’s we suffer for discredit his children. Jesus must not be spared to rescue the she the shepherd had to suffer their peril. He come to identify with mankind so that he could rescue them. Listen to how one commentator Philip Hughes explains this moment Jesus life, but now in the garden the moment has come in his self identification with mankind to home the deploying human depravity and fallenness to the very depths as he prepares in all his innocence and purity to submit himself in the place of sinners to the fierceness of God’s wrath against the sins of men. This narrative experience incomparable in the horror of its tour it is torment from which his whole being shrank instinctively but which was inescapable. If the purpose of his coming was to be achieved. Imagine with the format the father with whom he had existed for in such a loving, perfect. The father who protected him and loved him tenderly for 33 years it is my that father now stepped aside from protecting him because of what he was to show that that point Jesus you’re awake right now, my God why has thou forsaken me because the father had to step back because Jesus would take up on himself our sins. Imagine now the father that the tenderly loved him and protect him from when he was a baby, through his earthly ministry and kept him safe from the harm of the in the heart of the devil anyone who would harm he steps why this father moved from being strong protect the holy judge pouring out his fears, he step aside from the sun because of the sins that some took upon himself and so that he could pour out the fierceness of his wrath that was for us Hughes again wonders if the site uses any real but deeply mysterious manner which no one urgent Mankin explained the incarnate son as he hung on the cross and endured the desolating anguish of being torn away from his father. He took our sins and the sins of the whole world upon himself at Calvary in order that bearing in mind their higher judgment the righteous for the righteous Calvin also explained why Jesus had such dread in the garden. It was due to the fact that in the death that awaited him. He saw the curse of God and the necessity to wrestle with the total sum of human guilt see you which he did for us he took the depth of her guilt the whole some of our field upon himself all explained it this way segregates 521 he may be a limited dose into what send on our behalf to be seen. Jerry Bridges trying to explain this wrote in his book the the transforming grace of the gospel he said when God the father due to his sinless son the answer is shocking e-mailing him to be sent. I don’t know if that clicks with you he made the sinless son of God to be sent he goes on to this seemingly strange expression of all is his way of saying that Jesus was made to be on which is abominable and hateful to God all that which is the object of his holy and just wrath as our substitute. He was made to be the embodiment of all our crap. Now he all our lawlessness: spicy is law. That’s what Jesus was face that’s why he has such a lower court ruling in tears as he was crying to the one who could save him from death in think about this wonder. As in the garden is pretty and he sees that the father is the one who’s going to step back and pour out his formal math on his son but to whom this Jesus to their to whom this time does fly the same one that blows me away I handle it is hard to know that what God was going to clean through he would still turn to that that because he knew that he knew that father could save them from death he wasn’t wearing the gusset keep them from dying that we sometimes read that there and think well he that prayer was answered. That’s not we grateful literally he prayed to him who is able to save him out of death he would rescue him out of that he would say Jesus by raising them up on the third day not savings since we beside the rescue him from death. He seeks the payroll that Jesus was it was a peril that we all work before he came and destroyed death is the peril of death having a grip on us that can never be broken because apart from what Jesus did depths group could not be broken is the only way and he faced that peril, but he knew that his father to the time was able to rescue him from that peril. Death would have no lasting dominion over him rooms stop there with the text is a would consider in more detail the results of his piety and devotion to God which is the end of verse seven through verse 10 and will save that for next time together in Heber said to be two weeks his readers surely had suffered greatly will find as we read through the city to the text that they did suffer a surely they they wept bitter tears over their own anguish the Jesus your wept over anguish far, far greater than any human ever has wept he experienced human agony in much greater degree than what the author is doing is he’s paving the way he’s laying the foundation so that he can bring to bear upon them. Those who are suffering the the the compassion the that that fellow feeling that that sympathy of Jesus to bring to bear upon them as they find themselves in prison as they find that all of their stuff has been taken because they followed Jesus because the various ways they will suffer for Christ Jesus he understands to think deeply on Jesus the high priest of our confession meditate on this theme as we we talked about it today how Jesus agonizing prayer over his impending suffering on our behalf stilettos we we read of the garden and we jump quickly to the suffering across only get to the gardens okay what were those those drops really was a blood was just like you would get the file down by silly little things like that and we miss we should get and so the writer here knows that his mistress and he puts it in here is he wants them to face it wasn’t understand the The depth of his identity with us that he suffered the greatest as a it the greatest greater than the human but it was as a human they suffer here’s an example of how such thinking on his agonizing in the garden his agonizing because he saw what the next step in one be encouraged by the extent to which Jesus identified with you when you’re tempted the the and he understand believe don’t ever, ever say he can’t understand because that is sent that is wrong that is un-biblical he understands better than you understand your own suffer because he went through far worse than you went through fact he went through what he did because of what you do and do the encouraged when you’re tempted BZ that Jesus understands number two thinking about the depth of suffering he knowingly went through should remind you of how deeply he large feet ever wonder if you really love you go to the garden gets and put yourself there is place and think about what he thinks that the very next Was to bring upon himself the wrath of God for you and me and all of us will probably could say this you I love you but I I I I know me I would probably much as I love you but turned aside if I had that look, from the time about for a number that I could hinder the and of his he he he thinks about we space he thinks about you is going to do so I can redeem the temperature name I can redeem Zhao right Rex, I feel for wonderfully lush the cross is a good place to go. This is the card because as he faced the cross, he decided to go there anyway because he loves you. Number three that knowing that how much he loves you should move you don’t him through the steady growth in diligent service that’s what these people were struggling with really get into that here the end of chapter 5 they were grumbling they were serving when and that’s the problem is you see how much he loves you should make you say okay Jesus and serve you for every day from now that you know your file that you but you heart that I’m going to I’m going to show my love for you and would do this not because of an earlier favor, we’ve been told but that right rest resting we get that sets us free, that sets us free to serving just because we love you and that should be another thing moved that you to an end finally number four follow his example of turning to God for help. Yes, God the father is the one who’s ordaining the trials you go through the turn to that same God just as Jesus turned the same God who would pour out his wrath on him and God did hear his prayers he was rescued from the grip of death and death no longer has any kind of grip on him at all on us to believe because of trying to train yourself to instinctively turned to the father 30 told us that tells again, we saw that I the last person verse of chapter 4. Let us therefore drawing near with confidence to the front of grace that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

If you would turn within your Bibles to the book of Hebrews, chapter 5. This morning we will be looking at verses four through six in Hebrews chapter 5.

People love being in the inner circle. As our presidential campaign is gearing up and gaining momentum on to think for a minute that maybe you might happen to be if you were a you a relative or a close friend of one of the candidates and you don’t begin with particular but on unit would be friends with him. I don’t know but let’s say there was a friend of yours who was one of the candidates and the leading candidate in a team with the appointment and they had a real chance at the presidency and so you you find yourself in the inner circle and the vast you do to help advise them in their campaign and with their policy everything so as things are moving along, you find yourself jockeying for position with the other relatives and close friends of this politician because you deserve the possibility that you could be appointed to cabinet position or maybe ambassadors to some exotic place and see can just taste the honor of of securing an elevated position like that will seizing the opportunity for power and prestige is nothing new. In fact, it’s been around as long as there’s been power and prestige to behalf. And it’s even happened in unlikely places it even happened in the budding administration of Messiah. Initially, the disciples looked at Jesus ministry as a spiritual, political campaign to be something that they thought would on one hand freedom from oppression, but also usher in the kingdom. Now moms want to see their kids succeed and some of them will do whatever it takes even resort to meddling to see that happen and James and John found that out the hard way and with amici. And he recited her with me back to Matthew 20 we look at for just a moment of have set the stage for what we have in the work force this morning Matthew chapter 20 and look at verse 17 that he tells us in this Jesus was about to go up to Jerusalem is to be is his last track in the city he took the 12 disciples aside by themselves and on the way, he said to them, the whole we’re going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death deliver him to the Gentiles to mocking scourging crucify him and on the third day he will be raised right after that Morrissey happens is mama Zebedee Gratzer signs and brings them up to Jesus because she’s wanting to do whatever she can do to make sure that they get inside in a secure positions of power. Now you can just hear her son’s as his Dragon, not mom it’s not a good time just is going to die and she responds as any metal or and only a meddler could all nonsense is good I he did say he was the rise again suffusing the dead for three days we had get your positions locked in now look at verse 29 the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to him with her sons bowing down and making record a request of him it’s a shame that the bowing down really, stands in contrast which is asking he said to her, would you wish, she said to him command that in your kingdom. These two sons of mine they said one on your right and one on your last Jesus answered and said he did not know what you’re asking for. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink they have no idea what they’re saying. They said to him, we are able to cut my cup you shall drink but to sit on my right in on my left this is not mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is been prepared by my father. So first of all mama Zebedee’s timing was really bad for a lot of reasons but that is reason her timing was bad was because this was Jesus first advent it comes to asking he didn’t come to take over and rule became made purification said her perspective even more tragically was bad to she failed to learn that in Jesus kingdom that his kingdom is not built upon the typical worldly machinery, but on heavenly distinctives show that she didn’t get what he was about. She didn’t get lots and she asked the wrong thing. Now we too might be quick to follow these two knuckleheads and their meddling mom. But you know we may not have done any differently we were in their shoes if we knew with a new fellow with a fellow believer. They believe and live the life they lived we would’ve probably done the same thing the other disciples were probably just upset that they didn’t think of this first until Jesus started talking and they were glad they have Missy we too can easily forget that Jesus is really like, we can so easily forget his care and that’s all important. We have to have in mind we have to understand who he is it’s is not like us in that way and scared as we consider her continue her quest to learn how to consider Jesus the apostle and high priest of our confession. We need to consider his character. We need to consider what principles he lived by you. Consider what sets him apart and this morning will consider how Jesus was superior in his calling they turned back Hebrews 5 they see how he is superior in his calling on the reading of selected follow with me Hebrews 5 start, verse one. For every high priest taken from among men is appointed on behalf of man in things pertaining to God in order to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins he can deal gently with the ignorant and misguided since he himself also is beset with weakness and because it is obligated to offer sacrifices resends as for the people so also for himself and no one takes the honor to himself but receives it when he is called by God even as Aaron was so also Christ did not glorify himself is become high priest but he was said to him, thou art my son today I have begotten the justice he says also in the passage of our priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek we see in these this first section verses one through 10 that the writer is presenting to the requirements of God high priest where is going to service high priest they have to first be human. We looked at that last time you look at this morning that they also have to be called would be legitimate high priest they can’t take it for themselves. They don’t decide if they’re going to be high priest God calls them were to see that Jesus not only met the second qualification but even surpassed they were going to see that he surpassed it because of the surpassing character you were following this up outline we saw last time .1.high priest must be human that was the first three verses God high priest must be human. They were busy today number two God high priest must be called verses four through six God high priest must be called and then we’ll see you next time. Number three Jesus as God’s greater high priest was devoted to God’s will be versus seven through 10 Jesus is God’s greater high priest was devoted to God’s will that was sick of the second point God high priest must be called roofline in these verses that the author tells us three things about his office calling the first thing he tells his in verse four it is a no legitimate high priest is self appointed the legitimate high priest is self-appointed look at verse four and no one takes the honor to himself that he receives it when he is called by God even as Aaron Watts, Bakke, verse one we read that high priest is appointed to this office in here is now developing that in these three verses in telling us more about would use these describing about this requirement of a high priest no legitimate high priest arbitrarily takes the honor to himself actually saying here is no high priest seizes this by his own initiative the most about says okay that’s office I want, do everything I can to sees that office to lay hold of it for myself if you think the think back on on church you are a Jewish history and anything but that. Between the Old Testament and New Testament and you know the time of the Maccabees and all the Maccabean revolt in him in the kind recaptured things and trying to get it the Jewish political state and religion everything going again and high priest if you read much of that history you realize that they are very opposite of this number of them sought this and sees did for themselves others were part of that inner circle of someone who had power and to get appointed to that because they saw it for themselves the author doesn’t go that because he could draw on those bad examples his readers were familiar with them were bad examples even there they still this point here is to show that Jesus superiority of Jesus is superior to the best of class the best Levitical high priest the legitimate ones. And he picks Aaron who is the head of the class he says it just like Aaron the high priest takes us to himself we saw last time that Aaron was called by God and I referred to Exodus 21 in numbers 86 their God told Moses okay I want you to appoint Aaron and his sons from among the sons of Israel to minister as priest to me you were you would see if we continue on in the story and number 1617 that what happens is the will of God called Aaron to be high priest that wasn’t good enough for some people. I started doubting that and so one man theme of Cora, who himself was a Levite his eye okay why out of all the Levites you know is Aaron picked my his family one outline and lower thinking about it. One Levites without my friends here from the tribe of Reuben and list of some of those one them they can’t we all just you know because we serve kindness just all come and we can serve like and so Moses first says you know Aaron and I if this was an idea you know if you think about the story. They did everything they could to keep from being put into these positions and God’s no-no they Gatsby that’s fine a problem I’ll still use you whatever so you should and it wasn’t there I he that winded enough or is a no no way we should be able to come in and minister before the Lord like your thoughts to Moses okay what all of you. You get your will 5505 p.m. 10. And this man sin sin it like that and it will all come before the Lord see what happens and Buzzelli I might like if I’m right God would do something he had done before is a make the earth open up your to fall in area to be buried alive, if I’m right went wrong. But you know there like you go far. With and the so Corey gets to 50 men bring your will fire pans Moses okay of a packet immediate take it away from court his family his it was were following him. Sure enough earth open up a fill-in. A lot. And not only that the gusset fire consumed your 50 the other fire leading to the end of the story. They’re just like us know it’ll get you to the people the next morning the grumbling ill the reason that almost Isaiah is because of you Moses and Aaron and so indecisive patient he said patient with us so you Moses say okay. The two heads of families what you bring your your own Rod they would use wall with the tool that you to bring your Radhakrishnan on it is from on the tent of meeting and the see him and make something happen to one of them. See who is all mature enough morning we’re what happened Aaron’s rod it are promoted it take he cut it out of the tree where it of instead but it knowing the information predominance over three, God confirmed once and for all that Aaron was is appointed high priest and so like Aaron them a writer tells us this is our second point that Christ that the criteria of being called to his office Christ but the criteria of being called his office with the first part of verse five just like Aaron so also Christ did not glorify himself so as to become a high priest the author actually says the Christ. And that takes their minds back to song chapter 2 verse two remember the nations on earth are gathered against the Lord and against whom is going he said minds go back there and that’s good because that’s exactly where he’s going. The anointed one, the Christ by mentioning that it affirms Jesus appointment to the office of Messiah he says this Christ did not glorify so in Christ member his ministry income saying you know, take this office you it is open somebody stakeouts of Simon the 80 over again is sure to people and responding to his opponents and in Satan and now I’m not come on my own initiative effect John a he says there verse 42 I proceeded forth and have come from God I have not even, on my own initiative. He I and take the psalmist the father pointed me to us and then in the later that same chapter verse 54 he explained. If I glorify myself my glory is not it is my father who glorifies me one of his glory be nothing if you saw it himself and try to grasp it sees him so because you would be doing so based on the way of the world rather than the the character of God would be operating by the character of God she God doesn’t work in warmly ways the way we tend to think he was governed by the character of God Christ example is this embrace humility for yourself. Allow God to bestow on it was it was would help Christ lived he embraced humility for his bailout God to show you he income the way that that men tend we want coming grasp the power and prestige beyond father point Christ calling was superior Rizzi this and the rest of verse five and verse six Christ calling was superior know the first thing you want to call attention to in verse five is right in the middle are before the quotation but he who said to him so contrast to do Jesus being like someone who would grasp this form self contrast that by he who said to him like Aaron Christ was called by God. But the similarity ends there. The author is now going to show to ways in which Christ calling was superior talking about how in so many different things about Christ or superior here’s optimize calling out it was superior and it is a week to what is number one he was appointed to the supremacy of son that particular class. If you will sign now over these in a minute again and secondly he was appointed to a higher priestly order these two points are introduced by the declaration of God but he who said to him and think about it first big chunk of Hebrews from 11 to 413 your with the book ends were that that that sandwiches everything in the middle. With that is the word God’s revelation it would come to us through Jesus Christ he seeking in that we found at all throughout Scripture out that section. And so, having now that foundation he builds on that basis okay here the father has declared he has revealed that I have called this one. I’ve called them to this place of some so how was Jesus calling superior first Jesus was appointed to the supremacy of son. But the first quotation thou art my son today I have begotten the that this is not a declaration of parentage. Jesus didn’t become by the Sun at this point. Whenever this is will talk about is eternally been assigned the church fathers hash that out there wrestled with the Scriptures to come to understand that Jesus is always been the son of the him becomes a but he was appointed to a particular position the the supreme positioning God’s program it is that position of son ship that that as Messiah as the servant of God that I sent and in so is the supreme position of son that he’s talking about here’s a declaration of appointment not parentage to Jesus didn’t sees this honor for himself he humbled himself we read you know you you look at the gospel he see how he humbled himself our his his entire earthly ministry was that way was humbling himself he became one us and in the East, they took on humanity is him and humbly he was born humbly and little story. He was born to humble from he lived humble life he was not you know inner circle guy honor his ministry that he was humble Avenue have placed (intermediary disciples is a worldly person. The defendant of the people break of some and then it the greatest of his humility is in Spanish we suffering. I spent on Beard pulled out and mocked and scorned the.. On integrating way else is priest you that’s what he embraced that Sweetgrass the result of that he was appointed to an additional and higher honor he was honored as son he possesses the highest dignity he possesses the supreme distinction in God’s program and us. But today we we saw this early back in chapter 1 verse five, going to detail but are first to when Jesus was resurrected you to refer to Romans 14 acts 13 verse 2834 talk about that today I have begotten the those today I have given the the Sun this this year you believe in God the son. Now you have this supreme position in all of my program you are known as son we saw already that that trumps Angel that trumps Moses prophet anybody son is the highest entities in a class by himself assigned he may also recall that we discussed before though there was a sect of Jews in the Qumran community who were looking for to messiahs they misread the Old Testament and they faith leave that okay you have this this kingly Messiah and then the priestly Messiah would come in in the kingly would be subordinate to him and then Michael the Archangel would be over both of them that the writer the Hebrews comes he says nonionizing race all that is completely wrong. The same thing the Army showed you that in chapter 1 that Jesus is superior to the Angels as he is the son is okay get Michael out of the picture is Jesus is. Him. Michael actually worships us as told to pack it in what they saw he had this priestly Messiah in this kingly Messiah and just like if you were the first pick up her binoculars and you look for them you know and you get to images a lot of times kind it is in your your brain doesn’t him letter And you focuses what happens is these in this is what happened when Jesus came he revealed himself. It’s like this to Old Testament passages about this to messiahs said what they misunderstood come into focus and they’re united one person and so the to which the innovation to pick up this is the same guy guy but they didn’t and now that author is making sure the understand us the what might have been mistaken is to broaden the focus is united in the person of Jesus Christ. So son ship and high priesthood are closely related we are he saw that check back in chapter 1 because of the Sun it was through him. They made purification I sent so there’s this high priestly office as already alluded to is that is was way our appetite will for what was to come and so as we take Psalm two verse seven together with some hundred and 10 for he shows us that in Christ the Royal and priestly offices are united in one sub seen his calling is superior that was C in my outline and then two points under that Jesus which is that that Jesus was appointed to the supremacy of son was appointed to that particular supreme office and the other way which is: was superior to Jesus was appointed to a higher priestly order. Jesus was appointed to a higher priestly order to per six in here again God speaking to follow speaking just as he says also in another passage thou art a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek such as he was appointed a son he also was appointed as high priest method we sun-dried hold the Jesus was appointed to be hyper he didn’t choose that he didn’t sees that for himself was appointed to it. Another arrow of the Qumran sect that was talking about you. They have the the to messiahs will is a they believe that the priestly Messiah was to be from the order of Aaron like okay scratch your head did not read some hundred and us with offers to he showing that this great high priest is not from the liner he she’s using Scripture to show that Jesus is our great high priest was from an entirely different order in order is the kingly will see that later increase mentioned Melchizedek youra little bit about them and take a cue from the writer. He does it out there were like okay is in this is like not yet but which of chapter 7 at but don’t him because the issue was Melchizedek a Jew it was the first you ever had an we were going to find that Melchizedek ministry today. With the offers doing is, he step back to prior to the Old Testament River problem these guys were tempted to do is follow some of their own who had gone back to Judaism the misunderstanding of the law. I am biblical Judaism and the author says. Let’s go back to before psychologizing Galatians 3 remember itches of the promise is made Abraham is superior to the law which came later, much later Protestants and a little different way Cisco back to before the Levitical priesthood that’s wrong going to build my going to show the that Jesus is superior as I preached So Melchizedek represented a non-Jewish universal priesthood is one of those things that they didn’t pick up on but guys people would be more than just the Jews the Jews in the primary but then I can be the only the kingdom would be for all who believe this are author goes back to some hundred and 10 for the passage just quoted three times directly endpapers and alluded to a more times important passage for the author see the author is building his Christology on the Old Testament uses the Old Testament to build his Christology and along with the revelation came and there Jesus Christ. Notice how the author uses the Old Testament he uses it as such that the New Testament Stanzel shoulders of the Old Testament is the right way see a the Old Testament laid out these are all things God sitter going to happen in the New Testament comes at see the happened in that’s how uses the Old Testament and his point at the right now in the are in his argument why he brings up Melchizedek is just isn’t say more but right now is just sending using Melchizedek to show the that Jesus was called is called but it was is superior: thou art a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek Jesus was indeed all sort we do with all this will are author he told us what to do with it consider Jesus kept the first one causeways or not like our ways he for up to us you we would’ve done Lewis okay you look at Jesus come first it is not like 4000 some years after the fall to have Jesus, look this good so that that Jesus come in power first it was a he, takes over says of his kingdom and then worry about the end of Satan them from their sins they is when we would a we we we think in terms of okay you know like when Jesus was on the author is the case of a biking I said okay, now for across and show us you know it. Tell you what you a little Malay you know if he made them see the Angels that were the just ready to help. I was scared when you do it that way is because guys like us is a new things the way we would do that we we think you know from our our fleshly ways of thinking worldly ways of thinking not his way you wonder why your game the to advance of Christ in the order they Hueneme say, Savior, and then King in the sense of sight of his kingdom and root why you that were received first causeways in opposition to that was the world he purposely does two things our way is our our wisdom is nothing compared he is why it’s perfectly why it’s he operates on an hours is diametrically opposed to his wisdom we also makes promises ahead of time he calls us to believe in him by Fay Hebrews that the writer of Hebrews this is really a big thing we sometimes think they really just gets too in chapter 11. That’s not the case at High Point of faith in the letter but that’s not the he’s been talking about faith now in any showing that okay the way it is that okay Jesus could come in very good come first and set of his kingdom you know it this is no I’m going to send him as this this humble serve anything to do everything pestis, seem just upside down to he but you read what happened Jesus him but I tell you funny or do. I know really know you funny. That’s how we we think you God calls us to just be the because he said he made a promise and you can go back to the Old Testament New Testament for us and all look at all that he’s kept every one of his problems a sizable promises to keep and he would is never shown any unfaithfulness how is the perfectly faith he says. Believe me we have to believe in by faith it will look like a would expect it was made clear to us that he’s not like any God, we would make a all about we make up for it would do things the way we will do the minute it they’re not really this more powerful us is all and God is not like it’s altogether holy altogether different separate from us. So from the like are Lord Jesus then it isn’t by gaining the inner circle is not like by political power and prestige and oculus doodad and him will be able to bring in the kingdom or whatever like Jesus we embrace humility for ourselves first. Afterward comes Corey is a going store for his children and is the talk more about this not it’s on to tangent tangential but ever back in early 70s I’ll wrote the book. This is the were faith moment in a have a live like kings get and it was so off-base me for a lot of reasons this is one particular reason for this, works embrace humility. Now we embrace the the sickness that he you Danes for us the trials your gains for us though the poverty sometimes it here Danes for us. We priest’s because were told the that’s what he has for us. Now they will always be that way we will with our Lord Jesus be glorified. But that’s got strategy not ours consider Jesus are high priest consider Jesus our God

Good morning it’s always say good morning when the people of God gather together in worship our great God and Savior Jesus Christ is and what he will do with beer bottles to Hebrews chapter 5 we did start this morning into a new chapter is five it ever worked for someone are dealt with someone who was less than sympathetic. Some friends told me of the boss, who became easily annoyed whenever they had missed work because it’s a long take care of a sick child and they felt like that and he thought of them as less dedicated himself but eventually he had child and things changed because and since his wife also worked outside the home and to take. Take turns staying home with the child when it became sick and soap dish or grandchild and it’s a and often enough that he had to do that regularly in and so as you can guess, it became a lot more understanding to his employees now we tell told myself early in our relationship. I remarked to Connie that would stand for her to become overweight and now young men. Let me tell you right now but that’s a stupid thing to do college may make one smart but doesn’t necessarily give wisdom what Yeltsin doesn’t have problems. I can tell this thing back then. I did not have that problem with your high school way 115 pounds soaking wet and that was the max I can get I hate Michael Kors i.e., three lunches every day if you do not. I work things out so that I didn’t enjoy it very much could not gain and how it’s worked out. It didn’t matter what I did. I could not gain weight well obviously that is changed because it is an obviously I think much more sympathetic to those who struggle with the company. Now I can eat like a bird and I still look like big Bird only shorter and with slightly better here. I think I was there was a creep me out and the birds well centers sometimes struggle with showing patience and understanding and sympathy to other centers. The reason is because we don’t realize yet that were not any better than they are. We all are weak in many areas. Whether we recognize it or not we may pride ourselves especially in an area in which we don’t struggle and we see other people struggling in that area. We pride ourselves a lot of dude, we forget that there are plenty of other ways in which we do have weaknesses and probably, at the head of the list is private. If you have ministry someone is required that you have an attitude of sympathy and gentleness. You can’t become exasperated with those to whom you minister he can become angry with him and just quit. They will frustrate you, they will disappoint you, but we can’t quit. Fortunately Jesus are great high priest ministers to us in unbroken faithfulness. Why does he genuinely understands what it means to be tempted to suffer. We saw the last time he knows because he’s human sympathetic understanding is essential for not only those who minister but especially for a high priest-the high priest, whoever he was, had to be one of lots and Jesus was so look with me in the text no backup, just for second and begin reading chapter 4 verse 14 and read into our text hubris for beginning verse 14. Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in all things as we are yet. Let us therefore draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and may find grace to help in time of need for every high priest taken from among men is appointed on behalf of the man in things pertaining to God in order to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins he can diligently with the ignorant and misguided since he himself also is beset with weakness and because of it. He is obligated to offer sacrifices for sins. As for the people, so also for himself and no one takes the honor to himself but receives it. When he is called by God even as Aaron was so also Christ did not glorify himself so as to become high priest but you said to him, thou art my son today I have begotten me just as he says also in another passage, thou art a priest forever according to the order of his attack now speaking of Jesus in the days of his flesh he offered up of prayers and supplications with loud crying and tears to the one able to save him from death and he was heard because it is I although he was a son he learned obedience from the things which he suffered having been made perfect he became to all those who obey him eternal salvation being designated by, as a high priest according to the order of his son chapter 5. What are authors doing is he’s beginning to develop this. This new theme that Jesus is superior as a high priest and so he’s demonstrating first of all in the in these first 10 verses and will get to the mall this morning that Jesus qualifications as high priest are superior. He’s going to tell us it will see this morning that Jesus had to be human to be a high priest is worse. The next time they had to be called to the high priest of something that wasn’t laid out as a requirement for political high priest in which Jesus trumps them. If you will is no ordinary high priest he was far superior receipt in verses 7 to 10, that he was wholly or fully devoted to God’s will and in verse 10 is going to use as a transition that, spends us into the next way in which Jesus is superior but he’s from a superior order is not from the order of Aaron is from the order of because of that you at that point though he’s going to stop it so take that as an opportunity to give them another warning because they’re not really ready to absorb what it means for Christ to be from this milk is that in order, and so he’s going to warn them to rebuke them and then you have an extended passage there in chapter 6 to encourage the Denver seven the back is at the hotel the things that he wants about options that can help Jesus is from that order in wide-eyed order is superior to the order of Aaron so our outline for the next probably three Sundays. This will only get .1 this morning 1.high priest must be human to be verses one through 3.high priest must be human in the number 2.high priest must be cold verses four through six God’s high priest must be cold and number three Jesus is God for greater high priest Jesus as God’s greater high priest was devoted to God’s will be verses seven through 10 he was devoted to God’s will. So were to take up .1.high priest must be human and in his unsavory things about that neatly tucked away into for these three verses so that the first thing he says sent my outline point a a high priest represents his people before God LB verse one a high priest represents his people before God. You is we think back on the previous passage we looked at last week we saw that Jesus has this aspect is characteristic of a high priest of fellow feeling. We said that sympathy where he he actually came in understand because he has entered into. He has been one of Cindy is one of us and so he can understand being tempted in the same ways in which we have been tempted in all the same categories as in now. The writers explaining he starts with the word for and says that this sympathetic ministry of Christ exists because of an essential characteristic of a high priest at this point he’s going to back up and talk generally about high priest formal because this is something that the Jesus would have to characteristic you to meet in order to be hypertext and in so he must be human. He has to be just like the people he represents. And that’s an essential characteristic of every high priest he tells us so if Jesus is going to be a high priest he can’t be an exception to that rule he has to be human, just like any other high priest will have to be human and what’s the least but he fit to represent us. He has to be one of us has to be like us. God told Moses to take Aaron and his sons from among the sons of Israel to minister is priest to me Jesus to as one of the functions of the Mosaic law was to layout things like this. These various requirements and that Jesus will fulfill and show that he is Messiah. He is the servant of God. He is the son of God. He is high priest. All these things, it’s layout. This is one of those. And so the Mosaic law laid out the high priest has to be taken from you and in that particular regard because he was dealing with the nation of Israel had to be taken from Israel, of course. Jesus also was taken from Israel and not feel so I priest to someone who is appointed Sunday doesn’t say how many high priest. It, do you next year I’m the guy he told to do that he had been appointed by someone else nice weekend. That little bit more beginning in verse four will see.
What will he latest mentions it here he’s appointed by someone else to this office, he doesn’t take it upon himself and he’s appointed on behalf of Nineveh which is going to represent me he’s going to be the one who stands before God is even a little high priest with him as he would go into the holy of holies and taking the blood of the sacrifice there to get that on behalf of everyone else because they were allowed to and so he had to be cleansed of his sans the go in there and make atonement for their sins, and so the high priest is appointed on behalf of men to represent them in things pertaining to God so he’s the mediator he’s the one who is going to incense stand between men and God, and so he’s the he’s ministering not just for the sake of the people on behalf of the people but he’s ministering in things pertaining to God cc mediator is representative and his immediate and here is his function he says continuing there in verse one in order to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins now. Some commentators tried going there to figure out. Others are different between gifts and sacrifices and sometimes there is on. I don’t think he you really pushing the point here to show that they’re different in this passage and because it elsewhere in the book is when you use these terms to just refer to the whole of a high priest work at all this functions as idle thinking means any particular distinction rather I think he’s he’s trying to just bringing out to aspects of the same thing. Think about when the Israelites would bring. Maybe a For around whatever the animal was or maybe even the areas foods might bring the grain offering. So as they blind it. It was a gift is that make sense either bringing their gifts. But then once it is offered I become sacrifices it is just to aspects of the same thing. I think that the user gets their brought and they become sacrifices in any of these things together therefore sends another reason why don’t think that there that different is that both are where are done for since there offered up for sins that term for offer it was a technical term used in the Septuagint Greek translation of the Old Testament. It was used. Therefore, doing just this offering up gifts and sacrifices and so our author reaches back to the Old Testament and in uses that term he uses it 19 times in this book that because he is writing to Jews he’s writing about Jesus as a superior high priest and so it makes sense for him to use that term so much position locate on it every day. He had to do these offer up these gifts and sacrifices and Jesus comes when time permits.you say and so he uses this term multiple times and it’s interesting that usually rarely outside of papers as never use but all areas of’s one reasons why we don’t think Paul. Paul wrote this but it is a big place because Hebrews is the one place it really that develops this theme of Jesus as a superior high priest now if his readers were already thinking about the day of atonement and probably your mind went there to these urges and their mind would’ve partied on to Leviticus 16 thinking about the day of atonement. It had me at weaknesses phrase for sins they definitely would be thinking about that. This is the high priests ministry the most significant ministry. He had a year to come into the holy of holies into offer these things for their sent so set a high priest represents his people before God. Verse one. Now the high priest attitude towards people is tempered by his own weakness, his attitude toward his people once to ministers is tempered by his own weakness first to look with either talk about the high priest in general he can deal gently with the ignorant and misguided why since he himself also was beset with weakness probably the hardest part of ministry is people right now that’s funny this strength into a faith belief we have to minister to people. They have to be in the equation ministry but so rewarding and joyful and trouble-free right, him, people do so you know I’m guilty as well. When you try to minister to me. I don’t make it pleasant for you. He knows they too well ministry without people will be free of frustration and disappointment because we frustrate each other were not grateful usually are often one people injured us and if we do recognize that the minister to us. We find things wrong with it in a week we can frustrate each other or in more to the point. These coupons and him i.e. think about when you minister to somebody maybe your kids is sure you’re discipling. Maybe your spouses are trying to minister to them are just brother sister cracks me attributable to stop sending images keep falling and falling and falling in you put everything you’ve got into the bringing to the word of God and you’ll come to understand that maybe there’s some good Christian books which were walking through it that gets into the word of God to understand it going to the and he nicely stocked up here he frankly calls the recipients of high priestly ministry that is all of us you know if we were Jews. It would be used on a particular acne Old Testament times calls and ignorant in the sky that is picking on him is not noticed Matt and then going as we saying here. Interestingly, if you’ve read through the law the Old Testament the scene that there are two classes of sends errors that are distinguished by their consequences at you Hannah first of all, those those defiant high-handed sends forged there is no atonement Bishop sacrifice those premeditated sends sends of apostasy is no sacrifice for them it is curious to see dads like you could do this and you’re waiting for payday, or for an ally in the fund we senses that they had the person is a new rally typically to that execution the slums talk about here is talking about, and the bulk of sentence he will visit the everyday variety of sentence, which is rather broad it could be in anything from a response to do this for I is right now. I have business for the Senate initials to do it but it can also be intentional since full to do that, doing today is not the same as the high-handed no apostasy in a murderer things like that but still send me talking here about the everyday variety of Cindy is going back to the Old Testament is borrowing the idea and that’s what he’s talking about because those are the types of sends that atonement was made for which was the bulk of sentence the term paper and misguided. We would put this together. I think the ideas this those who disregard God’s law and stray into second those who disregard God’s law and stray into syndrome explained Lord ignorant can refer to breaking a rule. Without knowing it, you’re driving down a new highway that you ever been on and you to the gas is there’s no sign speed limit sign and you missed it it look like he should’ve been 55 it’s a safe number. For highway and bungled it wasn’t think about what is present the better way, if we look at the Old Testament to understand that term is to bear as an like to err is human. That sentence to care better and more I think appropriate to this topic is to disregard it recently to very send this to disregard and I think that’s their waited to take that word here. The word for misguided. This is word of that for which we get our term planet and you know what planet means one or and recently: that is because if you just observe them. They, what they wander through the sky, the so-called wanderers and so misguided actions talking about straying or are wondering the said okay that that is like as being soft on send you ignorant misguided and is not really. It’s showing the death of man’s hopeless situation. As a sinner man sins, even when he is trying his nature referring to numbers 15 and Leviticus 431 read more small test examples, but here’s an important point about said since were fully devoted to caring out all of God’s will. All the time. We wander in to send them said another way, we are intent on actively doing God’s will over to set out to do that we don’t set out to obey his law on purpose without a purpose. What happens is we wander into same enticing more! I am intending to get here I will send out okay. I’m going to do this and sometimes we do but how often do we just neglect were supposed or we aren’t responsible to remember or supposed think in terms of a child. They are and the plaintiff radar couple kids plan out there that have footballer kicking around, throwing her support that and you told them in no uncertain terms, you may not ever going to district unless I’m with you. You may not ever going to the street at so they’re playing all and new with all seen it will probably died Sunday kicks the ball goes off the side of flood in guest workers would’ve gesticulated to join right after industry with you so if I am game that I wasn’t thinking sorry you broke the rules, consequences apply it justifiably they were required to remember because you don’t want and he killed his same as example we selected sometimes weekly. Just it. We caught up in the morgue. He caught up in dizziness everything we neglect were supposed to do we do something were not supposed to do and still send easy to Us in the death of our depravity and to minister to such people could be frustrate and so he says the high priest must be a will to deal gently with now this term deal gently is built into words one which means 222 measure out to set limits to something to properly control is tied to word for word for feelings that they were half thoughts, so it’s to to measure those out in in in order to moderate them. Think about your backyard fence uses switch arts Lot of us have a fence around the yard and the reason we do that is because we’re marking our setting a limit to it for the kids of the past. This is as far as you can know and good example, but while both sides of us. We are neighbors of dogs and their great dogs. They’re just as nice, friendly, playful but because they’re not used to our yard if they get into our yard. They can be mischievous and tear things up with it or do things that no maybe they don’t know they’re not supposed to do visit our yard after yard and in one dog bless his heart he can never get enough to eat and in all these don’t like me he still can’t deny the and is well fed but and so what are Weber fences was getting that old wooden fence this is recent and dog would make his way hidden, find our dogs for bizarre dogs one that you know funnily enough to leave play food out there will the stock is greatest in a buffet and and and so whenever I had to put up a new fence we set the limits to how far his dogs or mind for the reluctant is a something here about her feelings. This feelings aroused by the sins of’s and high priest has to be able to moderate those to settle in because didn’t people mistreat people can be frustrating it can make you angry. He said we have to be able to temper that to moderate that and that’s the idea the picture that he’s giving us so it means to deal gently with a sense of avoiding severe responses over to avoid it growing up at him because I just had not yet gotten on my last nerve. The high priest has to restrain is to bear patiently with which the week to take them. The reason that the typical political high priest, who himself was the center. The way he was able to moderate that is he would come to realize that he wasn’t any different than they and indicate money sees not speaking here directly Jesus we saw last time in verse 15 chapter 4, the Jesus can sympathize with us because he’s been tempted in every category as us but it was the qualifier yet without sin is not talking directly about Jesus pay some about how those high priests could minister in a way which they could moderate their response to people said, he says that they could deal gently with her flock because they themselves were beset with weakness now that were for beset receipt again in chapter 12 verse one where you have this cloud of witnesses surrounding a certain that’s the idea.

I invite you once again to turn with us to Hebrews chapter 2 this time. We will get to chapter 4 in a moment but I want to start us in chapter 2.

Several years ago a dear friend of mine, Bill had a series of strokes and those strokes robbed him of much of the movement on one side of his body. He at first had a hard time eating just because of the movements of his muscles needed all in his face one of his arms and one leg and lost love that movement and said it took months and months of physical therapy and he was able to regain some of his former movement that once he got to that point he found a lot of joy in spending time with fellow stroke sufferers the like to just hang out with them when they were having their physical therapy are getting ready and waiting for the start and he loved to encourage them to stick with it hang in there because physical therapy isn’t easy and can be rather grueling and frustrating or a long time until you see progress so you would encourage and stick with it hang in there and use himself as an example of what might be possible for them as well if they stick it out in special connection with his fellow sufferers because they knew he understood what they were going for it in the grief and the anger that one feels early on the frustration of not being able to do would use to be able to do in the frustration of up the therapy not going as fast as you would like to progress to go fast as you’d like it he was a fellow sufferer the point them to the bed of his illogical: a massive stroke venture to Bill’s life and put an end to his much-needed volunteer work in a small way though will sympathetic help illustrates the ministry of one who can sympathize not just with stroke sufferers but with all sufferers this sympathetic ministry of our Lord Jesus was not hindered by his staff and the his death secured the grace and mercy to help that we all need a writer’s been demonstrating to us that this Jesus is the kind hearing Savior who would blaze the trail before us the trailer to salvation the trail to God’s rest now you’re going to see where this pioneering saviors trail took him and how it opened up that trail for us see where it took him is to the very throne of God to the heavenly Temple and it is there that we find the help we need someone to begin backing up a little bit was rushing star timekeepers for but we’re back up to Hebrews chapter 2 verse 17 we begin reading their viruses therefore talking about Jesus he had to be made like his brethren in all things that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God to make appreciation for the sins of the people for since he himself was tempted in that which he has suffered he is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted therefore only brother partakers of the heavenly calling consider Jesus the apostle and high priest of our confession have to go forward to chapter 4 verse 14 since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens Jesus the son of God let us hold fast our confession for you do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses but one who has been tempted in all things as we are yet without sin let us therefore draw near with confidence to the throne of grace that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need which is red and chapter 3 verse one that the author is telling us in his book ways we going to do in these first two sections of the book is to consider Jesus first the apostle and second high priest of our confession last time we finished that first section where he demonstrated that Jesus is superior as apostle is the one who would bring aware of God to his people was the one who would lead them in the way of God as Moses had done in a way illustrating or pointing to is tied what Jesus would do as Joshua would also serve as a type as angels who deliver the word of God and profits deliver the word of God Jesus is superior to all of them and so we find here is that he Jesus is superior not only as apostle but also as high priest in receipt how those two or connected certainly essentially these verses serve as a trip to transition from that first section is Jesus superior apostle to Jesus superior high priest but also serves as introduction to this new section that we are entering this morning this new section that begins that once he gets done with the transition begins in chapter 5 verse one and will take us all the way to chapter 10 verse 18 wheeler talking that the really large section but full, full wonderful true but how Jesus is superior as high priest in every aspect of that ministry and he will go through each of those in some detail is his high priestly work that enables Jesus to lead us into God’s rest as the one the pioneering Savior who would lead us in salvation into God’s rest the rest we’ve been talking about the last few weeks it’s the work that he has done that easily described now his work is high priest as a perfect sacrifice that’s what enables him to now lead us to salvation and into the rest that God provides the something that Moses and Joshua couldn’t do the Jesus because of his work because of his work in Calgary. We saw last time that the first section ended on a rather terrifying note we saw how the word of God is able like a sharp two-edged sword to two slices (a trait down to the 10th of who we are to the very core of our personality if it’s able to expose that because you people see our actions they hear words but they don’t necessarily know what’s going on deep down inside the presuppositions to the thought patterns in all those moves in her workings that will being give rise to what we say what we think we do God’s word is able to expose and they told us that we are at all times right in front of the gaze of God right in front of his face number where you try to go matter how much you might try high we were right there in front of the Lord and he sees as his gaze sees everything every bit of us in his word that it exposes us we see where completely vulnerable I like how Luther explained this transition he sits after terrifying us the apostle now comforts us after pouring wine into our wound he now pours oil and if you think back in to some A/V in older days of medicine estranged a bit since then but one of the things that they would do probably because of the alcohol and did my poor wine into old well you can imagine it has alcohol in it that smart quite steam burn but it was necessary the new portal and you’ll would suit and that’s what he’s telling us that he’s house describing the way that this author handles this transition he has terrified us and he needs to his readers had slipped into sloth they were working on growing themselves in grace and they got themselves in trouble and so gods penetrating word should strip us of any self-confidence we might have it should shake us out of our slumber shake us out of our sloth but then that leaves is ready to trust wholly in the one and whose work we we can try to have confident trust we can rest on his work we would find in him the surest confidence in rest as I read earlier the author planted this is the seed of this idea Jesus is high priest back in chapter to their verse 17 through Reverse one in ages, wet our appetite a little bed and made us look forward to what was to come an hour there and so it is always doing with that CD planted daisies now watering it he’s cultivating it and he’s glowing in our understanding so that we will will grasp why his high priestly when Jesus had priestly ministry is vital for us and why it really forms the foundation to what he’s going to what he has our he told us about Jesus as the apostle the greatest apostle he’s hoping to grow it so that this doctrine of Christ as our high Priest will bear fruit in us will yield the fruit of true rest in God and so we now set out to consider Jesus the high priest of our confession first point is this Jesus is our superior high priest verse 14 Jesus is our superior high priest who look with there with me again since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens Jesus the son of God let us hold fast our confession some of the good this end readers were thinking about returning to Judaism these are Jews their Christian Jews they have professed faith in Christ they have both a trusted in him and some of them have already left proven that their fate wasn’t in the gone back to Judaism and the ease guys were wondering should we decide they hadn’t really build a good foundation and so they were on shaky ground and those they were thinking about going back to high precipitating it looked to Judaism they the high priest if someone who would make the sacrifices for us in Hebrew the term high priest is literally great priest and so these Jewish readers as they would read this and hear this when Jesus says great high priest what they would pick up on is that Jesus is our great great priest sickness is the very thinking as Jews and hearing him call Jesus this Jesus is great he is far superior and how so will pick up the Jewish political high priest they validate the tour they did that happen how often once a year is only one guy once a year to approach the mercy seat to go into the holy of holies and so it will pass through the temple only into the holy of holies and that’s where he would complete his work on the day of atonement that Jesus is superior in that he passed or not the temple that it happens really learn later on what the destination of that is is the heavenly Temple Beth were Jesus Daisy passed through the heavens into the heavenly Temple where his work was done Jesus has entered the very rest of God and in that by him making that sacrifice he has is open the way for us to enter the rest of God now it’s significant at this point that he uses tunings for Jesus you notice that her tunings for Savior. When Jesus then he calls them son of God now it be easy because we’re so used to seeing both of those terms in the New Testament that we may discover blaze past and not think about a dozen intentionally term son of God if you think back in chapter 1 where he, filled in with that man for us the son of God was the ultimate revealer of God’s truth and right the very beginning of chapter 1 talked about him as their creator you created everything he’s actually one who holds everything together he was superior to profits to Angels to Moses Joshua but he’s also Jesus and chapter 2 he develops that idea of what it meant for him to be Jesus Jesus being his him and name is Robert Jesus is both fully God and fully man and chapter 2 he said that Jesus is the one who would be who was made like us who was for a little while lower than the angels the one who would partake of our flesh and blood the one who is made like his brother in all things the one who would suffer temptation like we suffered as we do separate quotation and so it’s because he’s both human and divine that this Jesus is able to help us hold fast our confession is he he’s the only one who can bridge that gulf between God and man Jesus as both God and man and he’s able to make the way for us to approach God is able to help us hold fast our confession and confession here refers to the faith that we have in him that is confession is good the faith that we believe in our heart the faith that we confess what amounts is that they that he’s talking about when he uses the word confession here is to that that we cleaned weekly clinging to that which saves us not of faith and faith of faith in the work of Jesus Christ the faith in him and him alone in his work alone we had nothing to that we cleaned to that instead of returning back to the old vain efforts like these readers were thinking of going back to the vain efforts of the law as it could save them it was never intended to save anyone they wanted to go back to just as we might be tempted some time to go back to whatever it was with her wit was legalism or Ogg or some other kind of man-made way of finding salvation and here he said we need to clean to this faith that we have believed and he sets out now to explain how is that we can cling to that faith in Jesus he uses the word for in the next verse with the verse 15 for we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses but one is tempted in all things as we are yet without sin is our second point is this Jesus is our supreme sympathizer verse 15 Jesus is our supreme sympathizer now at this point he’s torn was a Jesus is the son of God and that he is exalted enough to the right right in the father and a mind comeback as a Jesus is so exalted as God can you really understand us to understand what we’re going for having times have you thought that if some he says what you think about your Jesus is able to withstand temptations, in a happy understand anticipating this writer says it is precisely this man Jesus who can sympathize with our plight who can sympathize with our predicament having passed through the heavens yes he is there with God that he is still fully man he will always forever be fully man we will recognize him as both divine and human forever and forever will he bear the scars that he bore for us he will always be human to sympathize these two together into someone’s experience and to make that your own to enter into their experience and make it your own that idea is that of fellow feeling that the word has fell in sense of this code experiencing something of fellow suffering pagan gods and course are dismayed opposition the way men make up God’s bear the dislike more powerful sinful humans in it happened the day stand aloof and mom not help me this time sorry now I just don’t feel like it remaining batter whatever they stand aloof like that with the one true God Jesus sympathy arises from his own experience he actually came here became one of us lived among us suffered for us in the ways that we suffer anymore nation his own experience he has this sympathy this fellow feeling if you will now that doesn’t mean that this word is just talking about feeling or you might know someone says Lott really been reading lately all enough and that said it’s not that because it is always includes the idea of active help it’s not that you Jesus is up and I’m really sorry that you’re going through that you know that the warranty failed to pay it that’s it’s not, it’s like he he he knows is he looks down upon as he knows we are going through because he’s gone to him and he has that that Athos that feeling but it’s more than that because he is at the same time waiting for us to ask for help and he’s ready to give back that’s what this sympathy means where is it that we need help. Our weaknesses as isn’t really talking about physical weaknesses although it would include those because physical weaknesses can give rise to weaknesses that really can lead us in the sand where because we hurt when you might become angry or might become anxious as the kinds of things talk about weaknesses fear or sorrow dread of death without anxiety think about the ancient Israelites when they came to the land they came there 2K – and the report came back to them that their giants in the land with in these really big walls and the people most of them succumb to those fears that those were their weaknesses doubt was one other big existence that which can lead to send back Cedric and sympathize with this because the writer tells us that he is been tempted in all things as we are doesn’t mean that every thing that happens to you happen to Jesus per se but he suffered in every category that we have on whatever suffering the death of a loved one are just that the various ills of life he suffered those evening was exposed to those pressures and pains and felt the temptation of them just as we do all the various categories is that we can’t ever say that he can’t understand and he was tempted in every way as we are yet without sin the wonderful works of art because our Savior suffered in our place and unlike us he did it every time without sin; say okay now there he is singing ever since and understand what it’s like to be in ICN I fail you and me can understand well the logic of all that is just completely insane because you don’t have to suffer or be tempted and fail to understand see the one who understands the full brunt of temptation is the one who goes all the way to the bitter end and does not fail because he goes all the way to the very easy when we sin we always came then prior to the full brunt of the temptation that’s why we cave-in were not willing to go the whole way there comes a point where we say I does one send it out this person is tempting me to anger by the way they’re behaving there comes a point where okay they gone too far now I’m blowing up and on the love To me always when we sin we always cave-in prior to the fullest brunt of that temptation. Illustration mistakes a person who wanted Rev. back ages past two was being tortured and martyred for their faith and so they because they refused to recant Jesus or recant justification by faith or recant their stand upon the word of God alone or something like that and if so someone officials, arrest them I say if you does retain then what you nominated slate bejeweled bed and then take you to prison and on the way they beat you up if you just can’t let you know. Being you hang in there is a prison and server David Ichi in mock you they torture you and in it all on the same recant what you go and then comes your truck on that day stand before wearers judging you and I save your can’t let you go to so it’s a big go beat him and then we’ll have execution a few days the beach again torture you try to recant and I got to hang in there you trusting in the Lord Jesus is helping in the end of the date of execution and let’s say it’s in the day when they burn people at state that take you away there & recant what you go you don’t tie you up start loading the one around your feet porn now on recant and you don’t rely you start feeling the flames licking feet and it’s hurting I is recant and no the fire out what you need and you smell the burning of your flesh sending of your hair the pain excruciating pain and you don’t recant and that goes on for a while defined that person and not the one who recant it is the one who understands the full product — you see Jesus went all the way through every temptation felt the full brunt of them those of us who cave-in don’t understand the full brunt patient we gave in short of that so the sisters he does understand Jesus understands like no one else can the third point therefore we have confident access to divine help sunlight of those two things that we we have established in light of that therefore we have confident access to divine help verse 16 sunlight is foregoing points he gives an education here look at it for 16 let us therefore draw near with confidence to the throne of grace that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need under the political system as we said earlier only the high priest once a year could enter the into the holy of holies you could draw near and in the the Greek translation of the Old Testament the Septuagint to use this were draw near to describe the priests drawing near into the temple drawing near to the altar drawing near the mercy seat those kinds of ideas in order to do their priestly service and so if you put on your your Jewish thinking For minute you hear this as a Jew that he’s telling them who are they are not high priests and is not the day of atonement but every day to try and why because Jesus is our greater high priest he has secured access for us to God and because he can sympathize with as we have confident access to the throne of God how often do we need help with our weaknesses with the things that tempt us how often do we need once a month once a week once a day with our by 10,000 now know that that’s different different times a day different days but continually go is we help all and so he uses the present tense here he’s telling us to continually draw near to the current price not once a year but continue because we needed continually ones that look like pieces were to do it with confidence that we seen this one before this is a word for this idea of freedom of speech which we should able to go before God with courage and with frankness they think in terms of a like in the book of Esther in aware she was it wanting to go before her husband the king which is hard-pressed belief is this is her husband but he is again and you’ll go before him resulting from Arnie invited we need confidence because where we’re going as before the throne of God by going to the mercy seat that was scary enough. What happened that it every year the high priest is even going there what they do and Casey died to murmur to run his ankle guy sees his Dragon that you because of the new mess, he died is that serious the holiness of God is that serious is a PDA and I know it will be a solid bill: list. I is he’s telling us to go before the throne of God where God reigns in sovereignty but also from which he pours out love all of his children he’s telling us to go to that and that’s why he calls it not just the throne of God do what he called the throne of grace you’ll think of phones in that way whether it’s a great team somebody who you know is depends on them their capriciousness what was I got up way thinking today no God’s throne is the throne of grace there is when we find mercy to forgive us when we succumb to send because we do we need mercy we have to go before him were told to confess our sins to him and he will then forgive us and cleanse us but we have to go before him and do that this is where we find grace to help us not succumb wasted to withstand these weaknesses these temptations that we face is there and we find the grace and mercy and it is those together that provide the help we need to hold fast our confession of those of you who suffer anxiety you need to hear this God will provide the help we need just in time and unexpected ahead of time and were like a cordial to prepare me for these hard trials to comment the building stuff comes to prepare me for themselves greater trust in me but I’m not giving you grace that I did raise when you need it precisely what you need precisely when you need an inseparable Jesus he is a great illustration forests he promised his disciples in Matthew 1019 when they deliver you up do not become anxious about how or what you will speak Portuguese giving you in our what you are to speak sizes don’t be anxious just trust me it will be giving you their he will give you the grace you need in that moment in that you see he wants us to learn to trust him not to the store up of a lot of of grace that when the big trial, ready network that when we think that way that somehow works he’s been teaching is always time to trust him so that when we get there is where approaching this trial and we feel anxiety we are to tell ourselves the grace isn’t here yet but it will be here in time all I have to do is go before the throne of grace and ask why we do this and we draw near first and we just got through with the sexual or God is had to come back in with did spend every day the word of God but to stay in the word of God needed to treasured up in our hearts so that it’s in our minds that we can pull it up readily we need but we need to stay in the word of God because it is there as we just learned that the word God is able to to expose our real need we would call in all sorts of things we give names to our our problems are sands God’s word calls them exactly what they are and we we need to go to the word God apply to us to our heart so that we see what our real need is second related to that we must stay in God’s word because it is there that we find grace and mercy help because it got or does it just tells where problem it also tells us what God will do to help due to help us to hold fast to clean to our confession and not turned loose not say not that I can’t handle this anymore will back to Judaism or whatever we see is in the word of God that we are per told that he gives us everything we need for life and godliness it is there that tells us that he is God who is faithful to see us through temptations not around them through them to bear up under them and he will provide away through it not been a GP gives us more than we can handle often they doesn’t give us something that the only where the only option sent us was talk he will help us in those trials and so is you stay in God’s words not just you Lone Ranger Christian doing her own thing read the workout you need the Saints is the Saints have that we are fellow sufferers were fellow recipients of grace and so we can help each other and must help each other he establish that back in chapter 3 remember we’ve got this vital ministry to each other would got to look out for each other that know what each other’s weaknesses are what things tempt them and be there to help them and we need to reach out when we feel those temptation. Tempted if you have to pick a phone call brother sister said I’m being tempted, but to get in and I need your help and they must then apply the word got to you and encourage you to the two of you together go take it before the throne of grace is a lot we need that help we need your mercy into Christ’s otherwise we won’t hold fast our confession we need a third it’s this pray continually and confidently to the God who can both sympathize and help pray continually re-confidently Jesus is already in major ways opened way for us he is our pioneering saviors that at that trail guide if you will he’s blazed the trail force already’s open the way I am made a way for us to the throne of grace is open heavens doors to us and because he knows what we endure invites us to kneel before the father and before his throne and make our petitions will learn as we get into this section more deeply on the high priestly ministry of Christ is because of Jesus working across and this is wonderful because of what Jesus did his father is predisposed to help us he doesn’t set up their like this but you really want to help what let’s talk about what you’ve been likely is that he’s predisposed to help us because of what Jesus his son is now an wonderful to know that the Almighty God of heaven the sovereign one is predisposed to help us because of what his son is done for us is actually ready and oh so willing to help us he’s he’s he’s waiting to travel your computer feeling these temptations: out ready to pour out mercy and grace asked for my help and we must continually go before him and lift up our prayers to him before the throne of grace knowing that once help us something with the talking and is waiting help us ready and willing so let us go to him who loves us who calls us invites us to come before his throne will find grace and mercy to how because of what Jesus has done because he has redeemed us include us with his righteousness we can come before the father as if we were Jesus himself with the same love that the father has for Jesus he now has for us
