You would turn within your Bibles to Hebrews chapter 6 continue our study there in Hebrews six.  We have a few passages first to  look at before that the it there for now in the chapter on the number one why the author is confident about the good spiritual status of his readers but see that verse nine next time we’ll see number two what those things are they giving confidence verse 10 the number three what he desires them to do now verse 11 and 12 so first number 118 the author is confident about the good spiritual status of his readers is look at verse nine again but beloved we are convinced of better things concerning you and things that accompany salvation though we’re speaking in this way so after having talked about the things that the true those who do follow way.  He now switches gears and he’s talking about a different group of people he was talking as we saw last time verses four through six and in verse a those who would follow way but using the word but here he said the contrast of it is a difference between those people in the ones I’m talking about now and those whose talk about now he calls beloved see he has a whole different outlook on he expresses his love for them.  He also in that is showing his confidence in him and he says and why he’s comfortable calling them beloved is because he says we are convinced of better things concerning you.  We can take that as meaning that he is firmly convinced about us about their spiritual condition but the danger they face we we seen how verses one through three that they were stagnant in their faith that they had learned.  The spiritual ABCs about Jesus but did not move on beyond in spite of that he’s confident that these his readers are truly in the faith is doesn’t mean that the warning really doesn’t apply to them and it doesn’t mean that is also proclaiming with apostolic authority that all of them are actually in the face.  He saying that based on what he knows about the Christian life was not impressive gives evidence of real life find a similar pattern think about when Jesus addresses the church at Ephesus in relation to the there he does talk about you the problem they had a writer the Hebrews in the same way says that he’s firmly convinced of better things concerning his readers instead of lots of religion you just great religion a lot of different things religious things in their life against of better things concerning he has he sees a bright hope for them it’s not tied up within it is a okay good heaven after those first few verses it would become scared the closely associated that these things can serve as a sign that salvation really does exist if we can look into a person’s heart and see salvation as it is anything you know that we can see with our eyes that salvation is there except these things are the these evidences that salvation is there it we talked and Galatians about the fruit of the Spirit is one way you can be convinced is if you see genuinely the fruit of the spirit and you know James talks about the works that are but flow from faith Paul talked about that Ephesians chapter 2 it we we quickly recite those verses 89 your for if the remaining that way then this is a real danger spiritual stagnancy can be a forerunner to apostasy spiritual stagnancy can be a forerunner to apostasy.  Now in this long sentence verses four through 6017 we eat with the main clause in this it is hard sometimes to follow with the are English translations of it try to smooth it out for us English thinkers a great thinkers it they it happened one order wasn’t that important but for us it is and in yet it still is a little tricky.  The main causes this is impossible for those to be brought back to repentance are be reviewed again he’s explaining why it is that they must press on to maturity chapter 6 first one beginning of this context he see it would be disastrous for them to remain spiritually stagnant he actually begins his Greek sentence with the word impossible that I would be real difficult for us but Greeks could pull word up to the front writers and give it emphasis and that’s what he does here he wants that this word to stand out to them so that when they read it the first word in the sentence is impossible he wants their ears to perk I like oh what’s impossible in with him giving such emphasis to it we we should not try to soften it to say that only means difficult or will it means just unprofitable if not impossible, but it knows heart that would be to soften it.  He is getting too much emphasis but since it’s now look at the list of things in their first major point is this gracious influence and will be looking for verses for verse six for these gracious influence a read again verses 454 in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made they partakers of the Holy Spirit and have tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come.  There the first thing he tells us about these people is that they have once been enlightened you made your minds may go back to John chapter 1 member verse nine were taught that Jesus was the true light and the light Jesus that is the with the revelation that he brought does it will enlightens every man.  ECE Jesus as we saw the first part of the very first part of chapter 1 in Heber’s is that Jesus was that greatest fullest revelation of God.  The prophets of old revealed God a lot of different ways that Jesus came as the greatest in the fullest representation the fullest revelation of God is a Jesus came and he enlightens every man apart from God revealing true to us.  We all would remain in darkness there would be no hope we we could find out the truth on our own if God had not chosen to review it to us or to see later in Hebrews 10 verses 26 to 32 that’s this enlightenment involves receiving the knowledge of the truth.  That’s what it is receiving the knowledge of the truth things.  We might say that so when he uses the term enough to throughout the letter this particular word what is referring to our guests in the sense of sacrifices the priests come with with gifts and and they are people come with guessing that gives the priestly brings of God get some sense of sacrifices and so I think that’s what he has in mind it the other a lot of ideas about what gets me and I think the best thing the only clues we really have from the context that work is the way that he uses this word elsewhere.  But he noted is not gifts plural.  Is it so a singular but it’s what you see what comfort for the were gift me keep track it seems as though he’s trying to single act if you think about it for talk about sacrifice sacrifices in which of these sacrifice and the book of Hebrews, benefit from that because we benefited in a and ultimately from that sacrifice right would different people.  We live differently behaved differently.  We treat not only one another but even strangers differently with the blessings that come with that so they fellowship with genuine believers and experience the blessings that come with his salvation number three they have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit I this was CC that Holy Spirit.  This has to be talking about people who actually saved is always talking about their just a share were in the Holy Spirit partakers means back in chapter 2 verse four he uses it he talks about their that when the apostles not the author.  But the other apostles like: the they minister to these people but the particulars of apostles did a says he talks about their how through various manifestations of the spirit.  They’re on their apostleship was authenticated by the house with a report chapter 2 verse four God also bearing witness with them.  The apostle God bore witness with them both by signs and wonders and by various miracles my gifts of the Holy Spirit according to his own will ECE authenticated God in front of these people authenticated his apostles by signs and miracles pay for those signing gifts and so these guys got see to that’s how they were partakers of the Holy Spirit.  They received through the app apostolic exercise assigned gifts undeniable truth that the apostles spoke the words of God just as the Holy Spirit authenticated Jesus.  Miracles that yes, this is the Messiah the promised one indeed this is where Jesus in his ministry pick up that idea the blasphemy of the spirit us a favor the same kinds of things here at with the blasphemy blasphemy of the spirit you see the spirit God is working through He restrict chapter 6 were beginning that new chapter chapter that holds a a lot of difficult and fascinating but also as we get further into the chapter.  Of beloved and cherished teachings that is the spirit of God who is the dying and how of the believers obedience he’s the cause of spiritual growth were back in Romans eight verse 14 he said believers that they are glad of the Holy Spirit.  I also that a writer is is going to be showing us throughout this whole book that the new covenant is superior to the old covenant.  And so it taking us back to in our minds to the new covenant think about Ezekiel 36 he there we are promised is one of the new covenant blessings Ezekiel 3627 God promises this I will put my Spirit within you and cause you to walk in my statutes it is God’s Spirit who causes obedience who causes spiritual growth is that apply here were going to see next time we get to verse four that there a lot of people in churches who appeared to be is he will though the works that lead to death because if you try to earn God’s favor try to earn salvation through any kind of works and for them it was particularly the works of the law they will be to the in the writer he is alluding to the teaching that those washings and Judaism were replaced by the superior washing in Christ’s blood.  That’s a blessing.  Under the new covenant is a said later in chapter 9 verse two is going to use this word for Jewish washings it teaches there the blood of Christ shall cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God, but it would be a greater cleansing than those Jewish washings that was verse 14 the new covenant promise more the ritual cleansing it would provide for both moral and spiritual cleansing a superior cleansing that was what they originally understood when they were first taught the ABCs of the gospel this is a might to go back into again Ezekiel recorded got promise about this in Ezekiel 36 again on the new covenant verses 2425 for I will take you from the nations gather you from all the lands into the and bring you into your own land then I will sprinkle clean water on you and you will be clean.  I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols.  And then later in verse 29 he says.  I will save you from all your uncleanness talking there about spiritual cleansing he’s not talking about you know the right of baptisms the ordinance of baptism some but spiritual cleansing and he says that what happens to us in Christ the cleansing we have by his blood is superior to all those washings he saying we recover that back when you were say Amerman on paired with that now is the laying on of hands this little bit tougher because it is a really talk about it very much to talk about all the rest letter and I wonder what is it me I think because no one the letter is about Jesus are largely about Jesus being superior as a high priest to deliver the order and coupled here with these maturity means forward progress second growth and maturity happens by being carried along toward that goal and now third growth and maturity is accompanied by the right attitude toward God faith and If you would turn within your Bibles to Hebrews chapter 5 this morning we plan to include chapter 5 and this is a passage that oftentimes gets overlooked because it.  By this time into reading through need regular exercise faith that rental a lot of it to his if you want to be good at something like that you actually win or her complete a long journey like a marathon.  Need a lot of exercise.  Regular exercise is not like okay well this marathon is six months it ended in advance and in over the week prior old but try to run the Lord is him and you have to do to get after now and work hard Jesus Christ is that we will end up in the presence of the Lord will always be with it.  So really, what is the worst thing for us is the best thing for us, it’s only worsened since of our ministry earthly ministry was cut short by really for the person who dies and is a believer is very best thing to happen to get to be with the Lord earlier than they might of thought of that.  So playing with the word worst and really meaning best you would if God guaranteed you that you were going to go through what is really the worst possible and it was there was no if’s and’s or but’s about guaranteed If you would turn within your Bibles to the book of Hebrews, chapter 5. This morning we will be looking at verses four through six in Hebrews chapter 5.

People love being in the inner circle. As our presidential campaign is gearing up and gaining momentum on to think for a minute that maybe you might happen to be if you were a you a relative or a close friend of one of the candidates and you don’t begin with particular but on unit would be friends with him.  I don’t know but let’s say there was a friend of yours who was one of the candidates and the leading candidate in a team with the appointment and they had a real chance at the presidency and so you you find yourself in the inner circle and the vast you do to help advise them in their campaign and with their policy everything so as things are moving along, you find yourself jockeying for position with the other relatives and close friends of this politician because you deserve the possibility that you could be appointed to cabinet position or maybe ambassadors to some exotic place and see can just taste the honor of of securing an elevated position like that will seizing the opportunity for power and prestige is nothing new.  In fact, it’s been around as long as there’s been power and prestige to behalf.  And it’s even happened in unlikely places it even happened in the budding administration of Messiah.  Initially, the disciples looked at Jesus ministry as a spiritual, political campaign to be something that they thought would on one hand freedom from oppression, but also usher in the kingdom.  Now moms want to see their kids succeed and some of them will do whatever it takes even resort to meddling to see that happen and James and John found that out the hard way and with amici.  And he recited her with me but receives it when he is called by God even as Aaron was so also Christ did not glorify himself is become high priest but he was said to him, thou art my son today I have begotten the justice he says also in the passage of our priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek we see in these this first section verses one through 10 that the writer is presenting to the requirements of God high priest where is going to service high priest they have to first be human.  We looked at that last time you look at this morning that they also have to be called would be legitimate high priest they can’t take it for themselves.  They don’t decide if they’re going to be high priest God calls them were to see that Jesus not only met the second qualification but even surpassed they were going to see that he surpassed it because of the surpassing character you were following this up outline we saw last time .1.high priest must be human that was the first three verses God high priest must be I invite you once again to turn with us to Hebrews chapter 2 this time. We will get to chapter 4 in a moment but I want to start us in chapter 2.

Several years ago a dear friend of mine, Bill had a series of strokes and those strokes robbed him of much of the movement on one side of his body. He at first had a hard time eating just because of the movements of his muscles needed all in his face one of his arms and one leg and lost love that movement and said it took months and months of physical therapy and he was able to regain some of his former movement that once he got to that point he found a lot of joy in spending time with fellow stroke sufferers the like to just hang out with them when they were having their physical therapy are getting ready and waiting for the start and he loved to encourage them to stick with it hang in there because physical therapy isn’t easy and can be rather grueling and frustrating or a long time until you see progress so you would encourage and stick with it hang in there and use himself as an example of what might be possible for them as well if they stick it out in special connection with his fellow sufferers because they knew he understood what they were going for it in the grief and the anger that one feels early on the frustration of not being able to do would use to be able to do in the frustration of up the therapy not going as fast as you would like to progress to go fast as you’d like it he was a fellow sufferer the point them to the bed of his illogical: a massive stroke venture to Bill’s life and put an end to his much-needed volunteer work in a small way though will sympathetic help illustrates the ministry of one who can sympathize not just with stroke sufferers but with all sufferers this sympathetic ministry of our Lord Jesus was not hindered by his staff and the his death secured the grace and mercy to help that we all need a writer’s been demonstrating to us that this Jesus is the kind hearing Savior who would blaze the trail before us the trailer to salvation the trail to God’s rest now you’re going to see where this pioneering saviors trail took him and how it opened up that trail for us see where it took him is to the very throne of God to the heavenly Temple and it is there that we find the help we need someone to begin backing up a little bit was rushing star timekeepers for but we’re back up to Hebrews chapter 2 verse 17 we begin reading their viruses therefore talking about Jesus he had to be made like his brethren in all things that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God to make appreciation for the sins of the people for since he himself was tempted in that which he has suffered he is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted therefore only brother partakers of the heavenly calling consider Jesus the apostle and high priest of our confession have to go forward to chapter 4 verse 14 since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens Jesus the son of God let us hold fast our confession for you do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses but one who has been tempted in all things as we are yet without sin let us therefore draw near with confidence to the throne of grace that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need which is red and chapter 3 verse one that the author is telling us in his book ways we going to do in these first two sections of the book is to consider Jesus first the apostle and second high priest of our confession last time we finished that first section where he demonstrated that Jesus is superior as apostle is the one who would bring aware of God to his people was the one who would lead them in the way of God as Moses had done in a way illustrating or pointing to is tied what Jesus would do as Joshua would also serve as a type as angels who deliver the word of God and profits deliver the word of God Jesus is superior to all of them and so we find here is that he Jesus is superior not only as apostle but also as high priest in receipt how those two or connected certainly essentially these verses serve as a trip to transition from that first section is Jesus superior apostle to Jesus superior high priest but also serves as introduction to this new section that we are entering this morning this new section that begins that once he gets done with the transition begins in chapter 5 verse one and will take us all the way to chapter 10 verse 18 wheeler talking that the really large section but full, full wonderful true but how Jesus is superior as high priest in every aspect of that ministry and he will go through each of those in some detail is his high priestly work that enables Jesus to lead us into God’s rest as the one the pioneering Savior who would lead us in salvation into God’s rest the rest we’ve been talking about the last few weeks it’s the work that he has done that easily described now his work is high priest as a perfect sacrifice that’s what enables him to now lead us to salvation and into the rest that God provides the something that Moses and Joshua couldn’t do the Jesus because of his work because of his work in Calgary. Tempted if you have to pick a phone call brother sister said I’m being tempted, but to get in and I need your help and they must then apply the word got to you and encourage you to the two of you together go take it before the throne of grace is a lot we need that help we need your mercy into Christ’s otherwise we won’t hold fast our confession we need a third it’s this pray continually and confidently to the God who can both sympathize and help pray continually re-confidently Jesus is already in major ways opened way for us he is our pioneering saviors that at that trail guide if you will he’s blazed the trail force already’s open the way I am made a way for us to the throne of grace is open heavens doors to us and because he knows what we endure invites us to kneel before the father and before his throne and make our petitions will learn as we get into this section more deeply on the high priestly ministry of Christ is because of Jesus working across and this is wonderful because of what Jesus did his father is predisposed to help us he doesn’t set up their like this but you really want to help what let’s talk about what you’ve been likely is that he’s predisposed to help us because of what Jesus his son is now an wonderful to know that the Almighty God of heaven the sovereign one is predisposed to help us because of what his son is done for us is actually ready and oh so willing to help us he’s he’s he’s waiting to travel your computer feeling these temptations: out ready to pour out mercy and grace asked for my help and we must continually go before him and lift up our prayers to him before the throne of grace knowing that once help us something with the talking and is waiting help us ready and willing so let us go to him who loves us who calls us invites us to come before his throne will find grace and mercy to how because of what Jesus has done because he has redeemed us include us with his righteousness we can come before the father as if we were Jesus himself with the same love that the father has for Jesus he now has for us
