John 1:1-18 - Week One
Read verses 1-5. Compare these verses with Gen. 1:1; Col. 1:15-17; Heb.
1:2-3.
What do you find as the common thread linking them?
- Based upon the above passages, what would your argument be to someone that
would say, "Jesus was just a good person or a prophet?"
- Compare John 1:3 to Col. 1:16. For what reason were all things made by
Christ?
- Compare John 3:19-21; 8:12; 12:35,46 and 1 John 1:5-6 with John 1:45.
Explain in your own words what is meant by the words "light" and
"darkness" in John 1:4-5?
- From verses 6-8, what would you say was the purpose of John the Baptists
life? What was his aim? (See Isaiah chapter 40:1-11)
- Explain what the True Light is from verse 9.

- Read verse 10, "He came into His own, but his own did not receive
Him." Who are his own?
Why did they not receive him?
- Compare verse 14 with 1 John 1:1. What similarities do you see relating to
these verses?
- According to verse 18 no one has seen God. What do you say to people who
say they have seen God, or visions of God or Christ?
- John states that he was not that light but he was to bear witness of that
light. How are you bearing witness of that light?
EXTRA CHALLENGE: Memorize a passage from this section, such
as verses 1-5!
