- God is not pleased by the mere outward act of obedience.
- God is pleased with a fully engaged and happily surrendered will
Good morning to you. If you would turn within your Bibles before we go to Hebrews 10 let’s turn to first Samuel 15 so first first first Samuel 15 what does God really want to think about in the real covenant. There were a lot of different kinds of sacrifices yet of a vast array of sacrifice. There were some which were offered for sin others were offered for Thanksgiving you had some sacrifices offered for the nation and others offered for individuals, and then we come to the new covenant and all stopped to what is it that God really wants what King Saul was someone who really had a hard time figuring that out. Affect his real problem was he had a hard time finding happy surrender to the will of God and that’s what we’re going to look at a very sad failure in his life in episode that can be very instructive for us and for all believers in first Samuel 15 what you follow with me and writer work our way through some of this, but started verse 1% of 15 verse one, then Samuel said to Saul Yahweh sent me to anoint you as King over his people those people over Israel. Now therefore listen to the words of Yahweh thus says Yahweh. Some of the Lord of hosts, I will punish all Malec for what he did to Israel how he said himself against him on the way while he was coming up from Egypt. Now go and strike all Malec and utterly destroy all that he has in do not spare him, but put to death, both man and woman, child and infant ox and she camel and donkey’s up is pretty straightforward, simple command it if it’s alive, kill it. That’s what it boils down to write and there really wasn’t a lot okay know what it was the Hebrew mean here and out Israel straightforward And we as we read on. We find that Saul’s Army soundly defeated the Amalekites, but it was an utter failure how is that order. Read on now look at verse eight talking about Saul here and he captured a gag the King of the Amalekites alive. Now Samuel points that out for us and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword by big contrast small and the people. Hang on the that were Saul and the people spirit a gag in the best of the sheep the oxen the fat link the lambs in all that was good and are not willing to destroy them utterly but everything despised it worthless. They utterly destroyed all that she that’s the sheep skillet real nice order to save that one will such disobedience greatly distressed both the Lord, and Samuel and we see how it affected them look at verse 10 then the word of Yahweh came to Samuel, saying I regret that I have made saltine for he is turned back from following me and is not carry out my commandments and Samuel was distressed and he cried out to Yahweh all here’s a man of God. He loves God they love God’s people. But he was so distressed when God’s people wouldn’t do it God told him to do the King… And what happens is song is like a child whose mom says go clean your room. And after a while the child comes back is that my writings and flowers. I’m not going to obey you on your terms. Another do things on my terms and that’s exactly was all day you look at verse 13 a single came to Saul and Saul said to him, the easy he’s going to sugarcoating this now you can see in his minds probably realizing know I didn’t completely obey. I’ve got a good spin on this is so Saul says blessed are here is Yahweh he has the audacity to say I have carried out the command of Yahweh, but Samuel said. What then is this bleating of the sheep in my years in the lowing of the oxen which I hear sales think it. I grew up in the temple and never once did I see or hear a sheep a dead sheep, goat back never wants the dad ox go so you get help me here Saul said, kill everything and I hear animals that means their life will listen how Saul tries to convince himself and tries to convince Samuel that well-meaning disobedience is the same thing as obedience okay and watch how hard he tries to convince her to verse 15 is all said they notice below somebody out of the lead out in when they the people have brought them from the Amalekites for the people spared the best of the sheep and oxygen to sacrifice that was were going he’s put the blame on them. Now with this guy’s role in society with his job King these the leader of the people okay you busy have the authority to say when it if the people did bring the animals authority to say okay, now I think I can command you, young King to them and forcing but no he doesn’t do that. He says they brought them to sacrifice to Yahweh. And since your God. These repentance and now were doing for your God and what a mind I see it is just how he’s he’s trying so many different ways to to to try to justify himself bases at the rest we’ve utterly destroyed. We we didn’t do some in Bradley we killed most of the people in with the King live we kill most of them in the Internet some or something. So if it’s not only kids that do this at my kids earlier but you know there’s only keen is doing the same thing and really we all do at times New Testament we will try to pass off well-meaning disobedience or even partial obedience as obedience often we do and they would try to justify ourselves for we do we boils down to is me obeying God and we think that counts as obedience it’s me refusing to surrender my will to God’s will. So now let’s look at how to profit response to Saul look at verse 22 and Samuel said has Yahweh as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of Yahweh, behold, tubal they is better than sacrifice and to heed than the fat of rams
