Westerner Bibles to Hebrews chapter 10 Hebrews chapter 10 this morning we will begin looking at verse 32 see how far we get. I don’t think will finish but Hebrews 10 spoilers passages that he first began it looks like okay we can cover that much and then after in a Saturday night late comes in you realize that there’s just too much so so probably end up splitting up, but Hebrews chapter 10 memory is necessary for daily life. We can’t function if we had zero memory no memory capacity at all. We can function you can just look at the the effects of different kinds of dementia and how it just slowly robs the person of their ability to to just function in life and this bit by bit. It takes those away with memory is also something that’s very practical to us even beyond just the normal day-to-day stuff memory can be useful in handling problems. For example, i.e. it in my day job. I often and called on to give presentations and sometimes I have to give presentations to an audience that I’m not familiar with, or sometimes there is the added distraction of speaking through a translator. And that’s just that’s awkward for one you can hear the other person often talking their translating and everything’s a little delayed and stuff. And so if you’re the speaker up in front of trying to keep your mind on the presentation it can be distracting and all that together can to make me nervous and that can just make everything hard well the way I handle is, I remind myself that I know my material that the reason I was asked to give that presentation is because I have the knowledge and experience that I can pass on to those to whom to him and speaking and in so I remind myself that okay I know this they want to hear what I have to say and that helps to quiet anxiety so I used memory in a way that is helpful in a way that can come to guide me through the the nervousness the memories not just necessary for daily life. It’s also necessary for spiritual life and is the same benefits of it. We see carryover both ways. The Holy Spirit has a lot to say in Scripture about remembering about using our memory that is to the user minds to call up things that we know and then to think on, and then act on them. The writer to the Hebrews, he has all throughout called us to use our minds diligently to use them faithfully because we have to think a Christian has to be a thinking person and one of the things that we are to do with our minds is to remember to think on the things that we know to think deeply on them. We must think deeply on the things that matter most. This sort of thinking in the Christian life can be seen first you how that we talked about already where you you contemplate the hope that is laid up for us. And as we contemplate the future if we could we contemplate what Jesus has promised us what God the father has promised us in Scripture that awaits us that there that contemplating the future enlivens our hope, but we don’t times don’t really consider it we have to look back with a look at good things that exist in our experience in the past, we are to give attention to the things we should remember see remembering Grace in the past, revise our endurance so we may contemplate our future hope. But we also need to remember past grace that the times when God worked in us and work through us and gave evidence that he was in us memories of God’s prayer grace those memories working in us are necessary for sustained spiritual growth these Hebrew Christians to whom this man is writing had kind of fallen into a and apathy in the Christian life is a lethargy they were growing. They were serving anymore. They were not handling trials that well anymore in part of the problem is that it stopped remembering in this passage are author provides the directions we need to make use of this grace of remembering a grace that often gets overlooked you don’t hear it in lists of you reading your Bible study and prayer and meditation remembering user that you make the list well he’s going to point this out to us and hopefully drive it home to us. We need to remember to follow with me Hebrews chapter 10 and will start verse 32 before I read remember that the passage right before this 26 to 31 is where he’s presenting a warning to them a warning to not slip away into apostasy and so he now provides a contrast to that Hebrews 1032 he commands them remember. But remember, the former days when after being enlightened you endured a great conflict of sufferings, partly by being made a public spectacle through reproaches and tribulations and partly by becoming sharers with those who are so treated for you showed sympathy to the prisoners and accepted joyfully the seizure of your property knowing that you have for yourselves a better possession and an abiding therefore, do not throw away your confidence, which is a great reward for you need of endurance so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what was promised for yet in a very little while he who is coming will comment will not delay but my righteous one shall live by faith. And if he shrinks back my soul has no pleasure in him, but we are not of those who shrink back to destruction but of those who have faith to the preserving of the soul our author has shown himself already to be a skilled counselor and he does that again here whenever it’s appropriate he is faithful to warn his people to point out to them. The weaknesses that they have the things the wrong in their their Christian walk is faithful to warn them and if it needs to be a stern warning he gives a stern warning we sing that are a couple times some really time passages but he doesn’t leave it there, just like he did after that warning in the early part of chapter 6 he does so here. Now after that warning in the verse 31 he now comes along with that in brings with the warning this expression of confidence in them he’s trying to engage are trying to encourage them to engage their obedience to reengage it may have done this before. They had serve God. They had obey. But they’ve let it wasn’t to reengage their obedience to reengage their service to go back to what they had been doing he knows that not every negative report is necessarily fatal in other words, when he sees believers who have become lax they maybe you have lapsed in in their growth a blast and serving that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are on their way to apostasy and there’s no turning back that there done for he’s concerned about the low level of grace, operating in their lives. Now, it is keeping them from falling away, but that’s about it is very concerned about because he knows that that can be a tale tell sign that they are on the road to apostasy yet he has confidence in them. It’s not just a blind confidence like you know well you know is monitored know he is a he has some good reasons for feeling the way he does about because of the things that he is seen in their lives. That’s were to talk about this time and probably next as well he wants to use the these memories of the way they had been to to try to get them back to a high level of grace in their lives to produce a vibrant faith like they once had
