If you would turn in your Bibles to Psalm 110 red take a bit of an aside as I mentioned last week from a Hebrew study because the Jewish people to whom the writer of Hebrews wrote would've been very familiar with Psalm 110 and so is he's going to use this song are at least one verse out of the Psalm as the support for his next point that he's going to making you Heber, seven verses 15 to 17 I be good for us to try to start thinking a little bit more as the Hebrew readers would have thought as Jews in the first century you are familiar with this that we come to it you'll make a lot more sense to us. And so I'll wrote take a look at Psalm 110 the one with the whole song because even though he "in that verse from just verse four the will the whole song really does have a big impact on the book of Hebrews verse one is alluded to and quoted from a in chapter 1 of Hebrews and in this it will see the power of this this whole song I him all was packed into it is going to decide whole, live for us as we consider the next point in Heber, seven those promises sometimes seem like like pipedreams to us don't know what what pipedream as I looked it up but I've heard it along for a long time to know what was meant and a refer to when people used to smoke opium use a pipe of sorts on and opium being a drug they he would have fantasies and dreams that were based in reality it would be weird. And so if you're talking about something that doesn't have a basis in reality we might call the update. Karl Marx would use a similar metaphor to describe religion because he even use the pipedreams for the notes he did refer to opium and as a picture described religion and he saw religion as something that was used to convert afflicted people and anything that is a good thing that we saw it as just an illusion that would stand in the way of us a fully achieving our human essence where let me in our full potential. If you will and themselves. He said this religion is the this side of the oppressed creature, the feelings of a heartless world just as it is the spirit of unspiritual conditions it is the opium of the people will even lost men and women like Karl Marx the they can see that things are the way they are the right and it is you look around the world let the world know things are the way they are be correct and sometimes they're way off from working on the so it is we respond to that. Do we reject religion altogether it we just say okay you know maybe he's right… Our religion. Now we don't need it but stop wasting our Sundays and stop wasting our money and at least just enjoy life and tried to become all that we can be well here's the real first not all religion is a pipe dream of a lot of it. Everything outside of biblical Christianity is a pipe., Yeah but we need to wholeheartedly pursue biblical religion with its robust promises made to robust because first of all, God's promises the ones that were are supposed to been fulfilled already have been fulfilled he's proven to us over and over and over again that he keeps his promises but there also robust because we as God make promises they are for our good they actually do help but they really do change men and women into what God would have them be. Second, we need to understand how those promises are designed to help us into a lot of times see we we may find a some of the globe. Red boxes it is just a little skull daily bread ignorant and it's a memorable blast skyboxes in seven innings expectation about the it would have yielded up there is always list of promises he had verses in the problem is if we only pull one out read promised and put it back and close the lid and go about our merry way. That's the problem if you have one of those you like to use it. Maybe grandma gave you her something is a fun taken out read it try to understand it and try to use two that's what we functional me to understand how the design help us and use them and then this is part use third we need to stand firmly by faith on the right understanding of those promises understand them the way they were meant to stand on them by Fay trust in the God who made the promise and only then can these promises have a powerful impact on our life on how we face life some hundred and 10 is a royal psalms also a messianic Psalm and it gives us a glimpse of the two significant days in the Messiah is like wearing a seat on one hand the day of his ascension after he had died rose again and spent time with his disciples for while and then Rax 19 he ascended to the right hand of God also going to see the day that the future from that when he has the writer to the Hebrews is going to say in Hebrews 928 when Jesus returns the second time for salvation without reference to send to those who eagerly await him is going to give us a peek at his second coming. Now it's what gave rise to some hundred and 10 sometimes the songs will tell us up front know this was when David was something less than us. And so there's a lot of opinion as to the old when was the Psalm was going on in David's life warning he wrote this and I I think that it's not that over this the coronation day in because you read the Psalms and there's too much in their about the need to overcome enemies and I think it was written as David was was contemplating the state of his kingdom and what the do is this ideal different because first old poetry were dealing with a prophecy and children deal with it from that perspective. I'm also going to try to the in my mind pick a scenario in which David might have been when he wrote this it based on what I see in the text cannot that's my opinion see two separate that from where to find the text where were the way to the text and then add some color to it to help us bridge the 3000 year gap so we can put ourselves in David's perspective in and the what is seen this on first the way. David understood it the way he sought when you so we can get a taste of what really happened how profound it would have been for him to receive this revelation from the Lord, and then were going to it would have to pull us forward in and seeing how in light of later revelation in the light of the way that the writer of Hebrews uses it how we need us but we need to first know how the original writer and recipients saw something and understand from that perspective. That's always the first thing to do this were tried that's so join the trip back in time to about 1000 BC. David lived around at that time. And so we go back then… Picture from it sounds this is the part I'm adding that it. David is walking around one of the those magnificent porches on his house and in so as he's he's looking out over his kingdom and he walks by you if there's like a ledge at the edge of it uses walking by and he feels the do on the ledge and and he looks out over his kingdom he sees do covering the land in the early slivers of light from Dawn making those glistened and in he beholds that that's as he looks out there he sees over in the these hills back here he knows there's an enemy, and then he looks over here and he knows that there's rebellion starting to brew over here and his money and his troubled that that disloyalty is emerging among his officers rebellion has popped up even in his family and to make matters worse he's a sinner who is governing a sinful people. Yes, he's been able to subdue his adversaries outside of his kingdom. But how is he to govern sinners and how does he prevent his own sin in his own stupidity from unraveling his kingdom you think through know the reign of David think about his sent think about his stupidity and we think he and he also thinks the back on that day when Nathan the prophet show that Nathan shared with him words from God about how God was going to bless David in and make his his kingdom last forever. It we call it the Davidic covenant. Second Samuel 7 min. in their God said to Nathan I will appoint a place for my people Israel. I will plant them if that they may live in their own place and not be disturbed again nor will the wicked afflict them anymore. I will give you rest from all your enemies Yahweh also declares to you that you will make a house for you your house in your kingdom that is David shall endure before me forever your throne shall be established for after wonderful David's liking him us in the stupid one. I govern a sinful people. How can it be this kingdom was to say to help us see things from David's perspective of saved at this point he starts feeling a little weird and he's thinking in a little funny and baby he started back to the wall behind him and he slides down the cold floor as he looks up instead of seeing this that the roof over the porch. He sees just blue sky, and then that blue sky his tour and then rolled back and now he can see have as he looks up there in like a telescope Re: how we do a third digital cameras we can zoom in on something it is a like this. Really unbelievable assuming it takes him and his vision all the way up to heaven. David becomes the prophet. The word he uses here verse one for the Lord says that her his word action refers to an Oracle that is a divine revelation. David under the inspiration of the spirit received this it wasn't just inspired poetry. This was actually a revelation And that's a David sees someone walking a me the it is so much more than the his head in his hair white like wool. His eyes flame with fire his feet are like burnished bronze when you need them up in a furnace, and his face is is shining forth like the sun in its full strength in yet it is Greg brought out he's and he and things are just ABCs in this this glory and then David sees something of himself and this may not spirit he understands this is the son of David and somehow he knew this was the Lord just as salt Tarsus River when he's persecuting Christians is on his way to Damascus and heat radiated to tackle a bunch more that light shines out from heaven and him not into the ground and he looks up and he knows his the Lord and I still can't figure out okay and him persecuting you but he knows the Lord the same the David is a he sees the Lord it is amended he's more than a man with that kind of glory has to be the son of God. These the son of David he's got Majesty let I have never had he's holy look at all that glory he probably understood some way. Maybe it surely is to say no that he sees the Lord in all the Lord walking walks in the Temple he walks up to the front of God and you don't be sitting on his throne of David that glimpse of two members to persons in the Trinity I know how much he understood of David was a full-blown good perfect Jew said there is 1.but there's word and there the Lord Yahweh Adonai Adonai is over four times using the Bible for God the Lord, and then she scratched his head out let me use the term Yahweh and just a quick trip is for some of you may not know this I use Yahweh that stuff personally in whatever you look here but when you see the word Lord the name Warder God is THOSE the writers, editors are trying to show you that this is God's personal name Yahweh. We follow Jewish superstition so we don't have to put Yahweh text but when you see it LORD God it refers to God's personal name the one that he shared with Moses River below who said tell them that member I am century Yahweh means is from the verb to be. I am at so when I your me use the word Yahweh it's because the Hebrew word name of God that's that's Yahweh addresses David's Lord and then David tells us what he saw looking verse one Yahweh says to my Lord, sit at my right hand until I make thine enemies of footstool for thy feet. This was the day of Jesus ascension in acts 19 is white you know is I'm distracting this for us having he's ascended member there and ask he's he's done with his ministry on earth after he died and rose again and he's ascended to heaven as he gets and having goes up to the from this is that they went to that he always right hand means he took the place of highest honor and all authority in ancient times it is this figure speak your this this saying about of footstool for one's feet take it when it comes from is when these two armies are fighting in this Kings army defeats defeat 15 Army then they take the loser and in bringing before the the Victor and he has to lay down his face in the Victor puts his foot on faith and so this saying of footstool for your feet. It is used to describe the absolute DeMent domination over an enemy absolute domination does it occur Jesus ascension anticipate his return when he will come back as conquering King think revelation 19. For example any says sit at my right hand until they we know this until the long until 2000 years and counting guide because Jesus ascended but he has in his second coming hasn't happened yet case all of the victory to reread I had happened since 2000 years and counting. And that's a long but David gets a glimpse of when that until it happened so with the happened is is him. He's going to see when until comes to an end of the verse two here talking about his Lord David sets Yahweh will that is the future and certain certainly Yahweh will stretch forth thy a strong scepter from Zion a strong scepter they we start to hear this and the ancestral scepter of the staff of Judah that you find back in Genesis 49. This is the Messiah's Rod of iron from Psalm 291 in Heber he will shatter the nations. It's a symbol of might and authority in the Messiah is going to rain from Zion I think it means is wondering from the same place from which David right Jerusalem Zion another reason I think that is because at this point the soccer Yahweh's voice booms again saying to Messiah will in the midst of thine enemies 30 entities in heaven. They all live there Messiah is going to rain in the midst of his enemies. I think you will rain from Zion from Jerusalem Now David's vision hands from it would been looking at the heavens analyses going to tell about the hands back down to our and David sees that do covering the land in each drop is sparkly and the light and in what happens is that at once again as it is assumed in his vision zoomed in to heaven it now his hand down assuming in a realizes that those drops of dew are Kotzebue after all those drops their glistening but that's the this the Army of Messiah in their holy already tells us looking verse three thy people will volunteer freely in the day of thy power in holy array from the womb of the Dawn values are to be has do There volunteer freely in their to be clothing holy array David is like that possible my people volunteer freely and literally means that they will get themselves is free will offerings to God. This people. My people holy things and and free will offerings beginning sounds that only this is too incredible how can such an image of refreshing newness this the Dawn in the do have describe Israel and it's not hard to imagine that that the son of God is a common on his glory he's going to be Kenny's Luna Royal Oak were all fine with that but that's we can see but that his people are going to be holy and they're going to volunteer freely that's a little harder to believe that you righteous kingdom if it's populated by sinners happily ever be described as being closed in holy array verse four key that unlocks the Psalm first he says there God spirit was revealed to him. They're in verse four they Yahweh has sworn and will not change his mind. And so what's happening here is Yahweh is making a second promising at first promised one indeed as him the promise of him being King sit here at my right hand and rule in and you will rule now the second one. He the second promisee swears with an oath no hope your minds is viewed been through with this Heber's think about Heber six the promise in the oath member the two things by which it is impossible for God to lie promising of your we have the they pop up again and this is what he promises with this of the thou art a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. So not only will Messiah the Kenyan will rule but he's he has to have a priestly ministry to his people later on in history were going to learn that this Messiah the think about Isaiah think about Ezekiel Jeremiah how because of of Messiah is priestly ministry he's going to be able to pay for the sins of his people redeem is going to be we give them new hearts, 24 and because he gives himself as a sacrifice for their sins. They will be able to be holy. They will have a new heart. They will have a new hearts so that they will want to volunteer freely the one give themselves up as free will offerings to God hopefully are minds you pop real quick over to Romans 12 because that's built on Spring it's at this point that Hebrews takes off he takes this entry verse 14 he builds on these drawing upon the rest of the Psalm is well and him were to see in Hebrews 7 through 10 is chapters is where he's developing this idea of our high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek and worry seen some of that we have more to go so if you like to spend more time on that first because that's where calls studying Hebrews about set this point David's vision fast forwards at least 2000 years. In he sees what happened when is that Messiah is now going to rule when he rules in the midst of his enemies and he he sees David sees the scenes of war. And so David by the Spirit is saying to Messiah in verse five the Lord in here he uses Adonai to refer to I think Yahweh the Lord is at my right hand. I think the idea here is that you know with the Warriors as is a typical user spear or a swore. Most of a right-handed they saw the right hand is a picture of stream and so what is is like Yahweh's power which is all of is in his Messiah's right arm his right-handed it and so is the idea that is he wields a sword he has the power of Yahweh behind it it's through Yahweh that this victory comes Yahweh working through Messiah. And so then David reports on Messiah's success look at the rest of verse five and following he Messiah will shatter kings the day of his wrath he will judge among the nations he will filled with corpses he will shatter the chief men over a broad country you will drink from the brook by the wayside. Therefore, he will lift up his head did you notice the note of uncertainty in that where he he says he will shatter kings of the thorough victory the David wrath he will sit in judgment on the nations he will fill the nations with corpses and his role not only encompass Israel but the whole world because he talks about the nations and over a broad country and he talks about Messiah refreshing hint refreshing himself and in the pictures here as he is victorious he stopped by the brook he he bends down and its imagery to refresh himself and is the picture of of the conqueror and his vigor being continually renewed and refreshed the Lord is not going where he's not and it types okay like that two thirds of the of the world them at the rest for while all three continually renewed and then after that refreshing drink. He lifts up his head in victory as the triumphant, best picture we have now David is seen this and David knew what kind of state his kingdom was and a lot of time and we know from history that David's kingdom it crumble it suffered from foolish ruler sinful people wicked adversaries. And although the tree of his kingdom was cut down your member what but staying he out there and the stone in the room and what is going to happen is David's kingdom is a completely different a stop in a new memory think about prophecies it talk about at the root of Jesse, which talk about Messiah it will sprout anger the term a branch will arise we know looking back at this branch is Jesus the Messiah and one day the tree the kingdom will flourish under its priest that's how it's going to be different from David's rule. David was king but he was a priest he had the ability to redeem his people from their sense he had the ability to give him and you are so they would give themselves. Free will offering that Jesus has the ability to serve as effectual priest and conquering King in that day, we are told revelation 11/15 and the seventh angel sounded that is that last trumpet which which then this is the end. It sounded in their arose loud voices in heaven saying the kingdom of the well has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ. Christ is Greek for Messiah and he will reign over how long forever and have David was promised in that that Messiah would be keen his promised that Messiah would be high priest and he was promised that Messiah would be eternally triumphant in both of those offices at the glimpse he got the future that we do with all this wonderful material wealth OSU but my hearts full worship. Just a minute, bringing but just a little bit more three things in these are new to most of you, but I hope that it can't just give Drysdale little us understand what we should do with is number one use God's promises to build your whole think often on God's promises. We need to keep than ever before us dwell on the certainty in them because he seeks God promises these things many gives us glimpses of what really is going to happen in a safe just they were forced to happen he actually shows us a lot of time just for our sakes received only a get to look into the future it what's really going to happen but David saw was real. It was just I haven't the right medicine for discouragement is thinking on God's promise first point what you get the right medicine for discouragement is thinking on God's promises we need does promised number two consider Jesus meditate on his splendor in his Majesty think about our triumphant Messiah. He is had one enormous victory he died and paid first but is another one coming. It's built on the first one thing: our triumphant Messiah the second second lesson I want to get a cold heart is warmed by the fire of Jesus Majesty there times when Arcola hard disk: Mister we need that refreshing work you think on Jesus Majesty we look at this mundane world around us. And you know which is get worn out sometimes and we need to be refreshed and we are refreshed by thinking on his Majesty, and then third encourage yourself with the truth that Messiah will decisively put down all wickedness and all rebellion things are not there dead of Winter Derby we look around is just like his and would be the Jesus will put all things right in that great day it's not a pipe dream is not pie-in-the-sky Jesus work is priest was real he really paying for sins and that we trust in that were it changes our lives it is real in his victory is King will be just as real and so this third lesson contentment an evil world comes by remembering this contentment an evil world caused by remembering this Jesus when an impressively lopsided victory he wins an impressively lopsided victory will seen sporting events where it's just so one side, study that's been be understand when we see Jesus returned it was Paul washer said this Jesus winds that's not even close
