Study:  The Colossians Epistle

For those of you who attend GBC's adult theology class on Sunday mornings, you know that we started a new study this morning: the book of Colossians. This morning, I covered Colossians 1:1-4, including introduction and background information. At the end of this morning's study, I asked eight questions to serve as a "recap." The goal being to highlight the major points of the study, including points of application. Here they are:

1. Why is Paul's epistle to the Colossians so relevant for us today?

2. Are you able, and willing, to identify, expose and confront false teaching? Doing so with God's authoritative Word as opposed to your human opinion, reasoning and thoughts?

3. Can you explain the historical background against which Paul wrote this epistle to the Colossians? Specifically, the false teachings which comprised the Colossian Heresy?

4. Do you whole-heartedly embrace the supremacy and all-sufficiency of Jesus Christ?

5. How is your personal affection for your brothers and sisters in Christ? Do you pray for them? In doing so, do you truly thank God for them?

6. Where do you seek your peace? From the world's offerings? Or the cross?

7. Is your faith better described as: 1) an "active belief" or 2) a "passive acknowledgement / intellectual assent?" Further, what is the true OBJECT of your faith? Lastly, does it result in repentance and obedience?

8. How is your self-sacrificing love for all of the saints? Is it merely a feeling or emotion? Or is it instead a self-sacrificing, Christ-like, love in action?
