Study: The Colossians Epistle
Since some have been asking what verses we will cover during an
upcoming Sunday morning study (for advance reading, study and preparation
purposes), I will try to post that information as well. Just remember, it
can sometimes change!
Text for Sunday (May 29th): Colossians 1:15-18
Notes for Sunday (May 22nd): Colossians 1:12-14 (Praying for the
Saints; Part 2)
Paul's Shift From Petition to Thankfulness
In verse 12(a), Paul shifts from petition to praise (i.e.,
thanksgiving). Our prayers for each other should contain both of these
elements.
Philippians 4:6,
Colossians 4:2,
1 Thessalonians 5:18,
Revelation 7:11-12 (thankfulness and worship go hand-in-hand),
Romans 1:20-21 (unthankfulness characterizes the unrighteous))
Four Specific Reasons to be Thankful
1. Thankfulness for Qualification (v. 12)
Ephesians 2:1-7 (for a picture of this qualification; pictures us before
and after)
Romans 8:16-17 (to see what this inheritance is)
1 Peter 1:3-4 (it is an inheritance which never weakens/fades)
1 Corinthians 6:9-10 (it is an inheritance for God's saints, not the
unrighteous)
Acts 26:16-18 (it is an inheritance in God's realm of light)
Ephesians 1:13-14 (it is a guaranteed inheritance)
2. Thankfulness for Deliverance (v. 13(a))
We are "rescued" from our sin by a new spiritual birth.
2 Corinthians 5:17-18
3. Thankfulness for Conveyance (v. 13(b))
We are "deported" from the realm of darkness to the Kingdom of Christ.
4. Thankfulness for Redemption (v. 14)
Redemption- Between Christ and the sinner (Christ redeems man from his
sin)
Propitiation- Between God and Christ (Christ satisfies God's wrath on our
sin)
Justification- Between God and the sinner (the sinner is declared
righteous by God)
Forgiveness- The result whereby God sends away our sins (pardon,
remission, removes the penalty)
Romans 3:22(b)-26 (knowing the above four terms helps in understanding
this passage)
Ephesians 1:7
Psalm 103:12
Closing (From the hymn "Man of Sorrows")
Man of sorrows! what a name; For the Son of God who came; Ruined
sinners to reclaim! Hallelujah, what a Savior!
Bearing shame and scoffing rude, In my place condemned He stood, Sealed my
pardon with His blood; Hallelujah, what a Savior!
Guilty vile, and helpless we, Spotless Lamb of God was He; Full atonement!
can it be? Hallelujah, what a Savior!
Lifted up was He to die, It is finished, was His cry; Now in heaven exalted
high, Hallelujah, What a Savior!
When He comes, our glorious King, All His ransomed home to bring, Then
anew this song well sing, Hallelujah, what a Savior!
Through the redemption of the Man of Sorrows,
